Six thousand years ago, Earth was devoured by the Outsiders, those corrupted by the Outer Gods. The first human cultivators fought them for a time, but the sheer numbers of the enemy eventually caused humanity''''s leaders to take a new tactic... escape to a new world. Those with power anticipated that they would be able to retain power by monopolizing cultivation knowledge, but the greatest cultivators, most of whom stayed behind to delay the enemy, left Legacies containing their cultivation methods and pieces of the Dao they had grasped. This caused a reversal, where the old governing powers lost out to the cultivators utilizing the Legacies and humanity came to be ruled by the most powerful rather than the most clever or cunning.
