Not long after his level increased to 3, System's vision gradually dimmed. The sun was beginning to set, and it wouldn't be long before it got dark.
As the sky grew darker and the breeze grew colder, more insect sounds arose in the forest. Crickets and cicadas began chirping.
While eating young leaves, System noticed that the grass in the distance was shaking irregurly. However, it was difficult for him to clearly see what was happening over there with his compound eyes.
A light gray thing soon emerged from the grass and moved in System's direction. As the distance gradually shortened, the scene in System's compound eyes became clear.
A light gray mouse passed under the pnt System was standing on, then started gnawing on the roots of an unknown pnt nearby. The mouse quickly finished eating the pnt's roots before disappearing into the grass.
Many of the forest's insects and small animals were more active at night than they were during the day.
Less than a few dozen centimeters away, System spotted a bck spider about three or four centimeters long. The spider had released a silk thread that was floating in the wind.
Spiders released these bridge threads as the first step in weaving a web. As long as the bridge thread fluttered in the wind and stuck to something, the spider would begin weaving its web in that location.
The forest at night was obviously dangerous, so System gave up on his pn of jumping to other pnts in the dark to search for young leaves.
His vision grew worse at night, and there were obviously more predators. If he wasn't careful, he could easily fall into some predator's trap.
As a herbivorous insect, hiding and starving for a night was very uncomfortable, but it greatly increased his chances of survival.
Since he possessed human intelligence, System naturally couldn't live as recklessly as an ordinary grasshopper. After all, the most powerful aspect of grasshoppers was their ability to reproduce, not the ability of each individual to survive.
System worked hard to bite off three small leaves the size of a fingernail using his not-so-sharp mandibles, then retreated to the ground so that he could spend the night hiding under a fallen leaf. These three young leaves would serve as a snack when his hunger became too much for him.
The little grasshopper very carefully crawled from the branches of the pnt down to its stem. Using the spurs on his legs, he then managed to smoothly complete his descent to the ground.
...
The ground environment was very complicated for a grasshopper the size of a soybean. There were twigs, scattered leaves, and soil that reeked of decay everywhere.
After a bit of searching, System managed to find two of the three young leaves that he'd bitten off of the pnt. He couldn't find the third, and with the night growing darker, he had no choice but to stop looking.
After boriously transporting the two leaves over to a much rger, slightly damp fallen leaf, System subconsciously gnced up at the night sky. His insect face showed a human-like look of confusion.
A grasshopper's eyesight was very poor, so he couldn't see things in the distance clearly. For example, he didn't know how many stars were shining in the night sky, but he was able to make out two rge moons far apart from each other—one white, the other pale yellow.
This was no longer his original world...
System didn't gaze at the two moons in the night sky for long. He'd turned into a grasshopper and lost his memory. There was no difference whether he was in his original world or not.
He quickly burrowed under the damp leaf and began resting quietly.
Although System had forgotten the names and memories from his previous life, some common sense knowledge was still very clear in his mind.
The bodies of insects were very special.
It was difficult for humans to keep their bodies completely still. After a short while, they would start to twist and fidget unconsciously.
However, the body of a grasshopper was entirely different. While lying under the leaf, System effortlessly remained motionless.
Before long, his breaths became less frequent and more shallow. They gradually lengthened, starting at once every one or two seconds, then once every five or six seconds, until, by the end, he was only breathing once every few dozen seconds.
His body entered a strange dormant state. After entering this state, the hunger in System's abdomen quickly faded, and his entire body appeared to be dead. He only needed to consume a very small amount of energy to maintain his vital signs.
He estimated that he could stay in this state for two or three days, possibly even longer, even if he didn't eat or drink.
...
Plop!
System woke up fully from his half-asleep state to the sound of dewdrops dripping.
Not long after his body had entered a dormant state st night, his mind had gradually entered a state of being half-asleep and half-awake. When he woke up, he felt refreshed. It seemed that even an insect needed proper rest.
The weather was a bit cold in the early morning.
System started moving his slightly stiff body. His breathing quickly returned from one breath every few dozen seconds while dormant to one breath every second. At the same time, a strong sense of hunger assaulted his mind.
After taking a few sips of the dew dripping from the leaf's edge, System began chewing on the two young leaves he'd hidden the previous night. The taste of the young leaves had gotten worse while he slept.
While observing the changes in his information with [Personal Information Generation], System thoroughly confirmed the pattern of his level growth. So far, there was only one way to increase his level, which was by eating.
Although his hunger could be sated by eating any type of leaves, the leveling power provided by different leaves was very different. The rule for measuring which types of leaves allowed him to level fastest was also very simple.
It all came down to the deliciousness of the leaves. Even for two leaves from the same pnt, if there was a difference in fvor due to freshness, their usefulness for gaining levels would also be different.
'If I want my body to grow at a faster rate, I'll have to eat more fresh and delicious leaves. But to find those, I'll have to search for more pnts, which will also lead to more danger.'
'In my current state, there's absolutely no need to take risks. To stay safe, I should look for food the same way I did yesterday.'
After creating his action pn for the day, System concentrated on eating the two not-so-fresh leaves.
Because his level had increased and his body had grown rger, it didn't take long for System to eat the two leaves. His eating speed was more than twice as fast as it was when he was level 2.
After leveling up, his mandibles had also grown stronger. He decided to try eating some slightly rger leaves today. If he succeeded, he wouldn't have to waste time searching for young leaves and leaf buds.
...
System crawled out from under the leaf and quickly discovered a few uninvited guests nearby, which were six bck ants about one centimeter long.
Along with the night's transition to day, the creatures in the forest had also changed. The night's creatures had been repced by ones active during the day, such as the few ants in front of him right now.
The six bck ants were very close to him, with the nearest standing less than thirty centimeters away. The antennae on the heads of these ants were moving back and forth, as if they were searching for food.
These ants weren't moving very fast, and they didn't notice the grasshopper rva crawling out from under a leaf. System easily jumped away from the ant search team.
In fact, when he'd first noticed the ants, System hadn't felt any fear. His [Insect Instinct] hadn't given him any indications of danger, either.
After grasshoppers hatched from their eggs, they were no longer food for ants. Ants may be able to hunt some caterpilrs, but they would never catch a nimble grasshopper.
The main threats System faced were either hunters like mantises who used camoufge skills for instant-kill ambushes or accidentally getting stuck in a spider web.
Or maybe it was the huge creature sitting in front of him right now...
It had a brown body covered in bumps, a light brown belly that was constantly infting and defting, a rge pair of bck eyeballs, and an immensely huge mouth.
After System had jumped three times to avoid the ant search team, he wound up nding right in front of a toad camoufged in a pile of dead leaves.
Toads were one of the most famous insect hunters known to System, and he now found himself fewer than ten centimeters away from one. He could even feel the moist, fishy breath being exhaled from the toad's enormous mouth.
