Chapter 1 – New Life

The st moment of his final memory was very blurry. He seemed to be in a hospital ward. Someone nearby was talking, but he wasn't paying attention to what they were saying. He simply gazed at the clouds outside the window with unfocused eyes.

  "..."

He opened his mouth to say something, but in the end, no sound came out. After that, his vision grew dark.

Then, after an unknown amount of time, he seemed to pass through a long stretch of darkness before appearing in a strange forest.

  ...

He fiddled with the soft antennae on his head using his forelegs, then exerted force with his hind legs to jump onto the young leaves of an unknown pnt nearby, stumbling when he nded.

Two or three hours had passed since he woke up in this new body.

He wasn't accustomed to the mosaic-like vision of an insect's compound eyes. Because he could only see clearly up to a few dozen centimeters away, and the images his eyes picked up were scattered, it was hard for him to control the direction of his jumps.

'Have I come back to life?'

He seemed to have forgotten his original name, but in his current body, he was called System.

  ...

Race: Green-Tailed Grasshopper (Larva)Title: NoneName: System

Rank: NoneLevel: 2/15Special Talents: [Digital Code] (1/1), [Molting and Growth] (10/13), [Insect Adaptability] (5/21).

Derived Skills: [Personal Information Generation] (1/1), [Insect Instinct] (2/5), [Limb Regeneration] (2/11), [Green Camoufge] (1/4).

  ...

He didn't know why he was named System. That was the name written on the floating light screen that appeared whenever he used [Personal Information Generation], so for now he called himself that.

[Personal Information Generation] seemed to be an instinctive skill. Using it was as natural as lifting his legs. System had automatically used this Derived Skill immediately upon waking up in the forest.

Tapping on [Personal Information Generation] would dispy more detailed information.

For example, after clicking on a talent or skill, detailed information describing it would appear. If he tapped on his race details, his current body length and weight would be dispyed, as well as some other information.

  ...

  Length: 2 millimetersWeight: 10 milligrams

  ...

If this information was accurate, he was now a grasshopper rva about as big as a grain of rice.

The antennae on top of his little grasshopper head swung back and forth, carefully sensing the breeze blowing past.

Grasshopper rvae had very strong digestive abilities. They would get extremely hungry if they stopped eating for even a moment.

System moved to the edge of the young leaf he'd just jumped onto and thoroughly scanned the nearby area for threats. After seeing that there was no danger, he took a bite of the leaf he was standing on. This young leaf was very hard and tasteless, like eating wood, so he quickly stopped eating it.

He turned and looked around, then jumped to another unknown pnt leaf. Just like he did after his previous jump, he moved to the edge of the leaf and observed his surroundings before he started eating. This time, his insect face showed a satisfied look.

This leaf tasted like a sweet apple. His body seemed to like it, so he started eating the leaf in big mouthfuls.

Ever since he first woke up as a grasshopper rva, his body had been hungry, and it seemed as if he couldn't get full no matter how much he ate.

An hour or two earlier, after restlessly eating young leaves several times the size of his body, his level had increased to 2. While leveling up up, his body had unscientifically grown in size, and his physical fitness had improved in all aspects.

Being able to level up felt a bit like pying a game, but System was a real existence of flesh and blood.

There also seemed to be various magical powers hidden inside his body.

  ...

[Digital Code] (1/1): Provides the ability to digitize, calcute, and analyze. Improves growth efficiency. System's Special Talent.

[Molting and Growth] (10/13): Allows one to further grow through molting, undergoing metamorphosis at levels 5 and 8. A Special Talent of some insects.

[Insect Adaptability] (5/21): Provides the ability to improve one's level by consuming food. When one's level improves, there is a low probability of mutation and a chance of obtaining new Special Talents or Derived Skills. A Special Talent allowing insects to adapt to their environment.

  ...

If System guessed correctly, the reason his body could change like a character in a video game was because of his [Digital Code] talent.

It was precisely because of this [Digital Code] talent that he was able to possess the Derived Skill [Personal Information Generation]. This kept him from being ignorant of his physical characteristics and special abilities after being reborn as a grasshopper rva.

However, he had no control over this [Digital Code]. As long as he tried sensing it for even a moment, it seemed like he was drowning in a digital ocean composed of 0s and 1s, and his mind felt like it was about to explode.

On the other hand, although he couldn't control his two talents [Molting and Growth] and [Insect Adaptability], he could clearly feel them as if they were a part of his body's flesh and blood.

[Molting and Growth] was like an inheritance in his bloodline. It allowed him to naturally understand how a green-tailed grasshopper rva like him could turn into an adult green-tailed grasshopper.

[Insect Adaptability] was a mysterious power attached to his bloodline. He couldn't feel it directly, but his Derived Skills [Insect Instinct] and [Limb Regeneration] existed because of [Insect Adaptability].

[Limb Regeneration] gave System the feeling that he'd be able to grow back a severed limb after healing for only a few days.

As for [Insect Instinct], it was an ability simir to a sixth sense. It was precisely because of this sixth sense that he'd successfully escaped his first crisis in this world.

At that time, he was happily gnawing on the young leaf under his feet. The unknown young leaf was the most delicious one that System had eaten since first waking up. It tasted like a big cherry from his previous life, which he'd really enjoyed.

While he was busy indulging himself in his meal, his antennae had suddenly given him a strange feeling. He was confused about this unusual new sensation, and while he was pondering what it might mean, his body tensed up and unconsciously jumped.

Right after he jumped, a one-centimeter-tall insect with forelimbs shaped like scythes suddenly crawled out from the back of the leaf. Its exoskeleton was the same color as a withered leaf. The insect appeared to be a praying mantis rva. If System had jumped a moment ter, he would have become a delicious meal for that little praying mantis.

It was precisely because of that crisis that System was much more cautious in his ter actions.

Every time he ate a leaf, he first moved to the edge and carefully checked the leaf's back to see if there were any predators such as mantises or ants there.

Another result of the crisis was System recalling some of the contents of a documentary called Animal World in his previous life. He remembered those strange insect predators that he'd seen in the documentary.

In the insect world, murderous intentions were often hidden behind tranquility, and those true crises couldn't be avoided even if he had [Insect Instinct].

Maybe he would accidentally jump onto a praying mantis disguised as a leaf next time and be directly eaten by the predator.

  ...

While observing the surrounding area carefully, System kept eating the young leaves of various pnts in an attempt to relieve his hunger.

As a grasshopper rva, his mandibles were very soft, so he could only eat pnts' young leaves and leaf buds. However, it took a long time to eat even a small leaf due to his tiny body.

Just like that, after System once again ate leaves equal to about three or four times his own weight, he leveled up again. He experienced a slight tingling sensation before his body began to rapidly grow rger.

Although his body continuously grew rger whenever he ate, he'd only grown from two to three millimeters after eating non-stop for a few hours. However, when he reached level 3, the increase in his body's size was much more pronounced. He grew directly from three to five millimeters.

When he leveled up, his [Insect Adaptability] (5/21) changed to [Insect Adaptability] (6/21), and [Green Camoufge] (1/4) changed to [Green Camoufge] (2/4).

The improvement to [Insect Adaptability] wasn't very clear to System, but the upgrade of [Green Camoufge] was much more obvious. His color changed to more of an emerald green, and the leaf-vein patterns on his body grew clearer and more realistic.

  Author's Note:

In order to avoid unnecessary comments, the author is publishing some common sense at the end of the first chapter.

All bugs have blood and a heartbeat.

Grasshoppers are herbivorous insects, but they also eat meat, and will even eat their own kind when necessary.

The rvae of grasshoppers aren't actually called rvae, they are called nymphs. Larvae is just the stage of life some insects go through after they hatch from eggs. For the convenience of readers' understanding, they are all collectively called rvae.

In addition, most insects such as grasshoppers and crickets molt five times, but in this magical world, the author sets two molts for grasshoppers, so don't argue with the author.
