Chapter 7
After the excitement of introductions had settled, Track and Enny led me to a secure room, separate from the lively atmosphere of the Apex quarters. The space was sterile, illuminated by harsh, clinical lights. My pulse quickened slightly, sensing the seriousness of the conversation ahead.
Track’s expression grew solemn as he began, "Dion, before you go any further, you need to understand exactly what's involved in the enhancement procedure."
Enny nodded gently, eyes full of concern. "It’s not without significant risk. The genetic enhancements alter your body fundamentally, and not every subject reacts well to the procedure."
I swallowed nervously, the initial excitement replaced by apprehension. "What kind of risks are we talking about?"
Track sighed deeply, clearly uncomfortable. "Side effects can be severe. Some couriers experience physical trauma, neurological damage, or severe genetic reactions."
Enny hesitated before continuing softly, "And there have been fatalities, Dion."
Shock hit me hard, my stomach twisting painfully. "People have died? How many?"
Track exchanged a brief, troubled glance with Enny before answering reluctantly, "More than corporate openly acknowledges. Each participant understands and accepts these risks."
If you stumble upon this narrative on Amazon, it's taken without the author's consent. Report it.
Anger and confusion surged within me. "But how? How can Amazia just hide this? How is this even legal?"
Enny's voice remained calm yet pained, "Participants sign extensive waivers acknowledging the danger. Amazia has significant influence—government agencies know exactly what happens, and they've granted clearance due to the strategic advantage we provide."
Disbelief mixed with anger. "You're saying the government is okay with this?"
Track’s jaw tightened slightly, clearly displeased but resigned. "It's complicated. Corporate pays generously to maintain silence and approval. This program is considered vital for national security and corporate dominance."
I stepped back slightly, heart pounding anxiously. "Is it really worth risking my life?"
Enny reached out softly, her hand briefly touching my arm in reassurance. "We can't make that decision for you, Dion. It's entirely yours to make."
Seeing my hesitation, Track pulled out a tablet, displaying it clearly in front of me. "Look, Dion. This would be your new salary upon completing the procedure and becoming an official Apex courier."
My eyes widened, breath hitching sharply. The figure was enormous—more money than I'd ever imagined earning. The thought of my family's struggles vanishing in an instant, my sister's dreams within easy reach, shook my resolve.
Track saw my expression change, understanding dawning in his eyes. "It’s life-changing money, Dion. That's why people take the risk."
I hesitated a final moment, thinking of the dangers I'd just learned about. But memories of my parents' sacrifices, my sister’s hopeful dreams, and years of living paycheck to paycheck overshadowed my fears. My resolve strengthened, determination overtaking doubt.
I nodded slowly, heart heavy yet decided. "I'll do it."
Track offered a solemn, approving nod. "Alright. We'll prepare immediately. Welcome to your new life, Dion."
