The girls waited in Benjamin’s room. A few hours later, Byron came stomping in.
“Stop writing things on my wall!” he said.
“I didn’t write anything on your wall,” Benjamin grumbled.
“I’ll tell mum,” said Byron.
“Go on then,” said Benjamin in a sad voice.
Byron frowned. He had expected Benjamin to argue. “I’m not going to give you my room. I already know Casper is a ghost, anyway. We watched the movie last month remember? Mum let me watch it this time and she said he’s not real. He’s just on the TV.” He poked his tongue out at his brother.
“What did you say?” Benjamin asked. He sounded surprised.
“I said I already know Casper is a ghost,” Byron said.
Before his brother could finish speaking, Benjamin got to his feet and ran to Byron’s room. He looked at the writing.

The girls all crowded around. They thought seeing the words would make him happy but instead he scowled.
“Ghosts aren’t real,” Benjamin told his brother. “Stop writing on your own walls.” Then he stomped back to his own room.
“But I didn’t,” Byron called after him. Then he turned and accidentally walked right through Cassie.
“Ahhhh!” Cassie screamed. “I hate it when they do that. It gives me the heebie jeebies.”
Byron shivered and then he looked around the room with wide eyes.
When he saw the words again, he ran out of the room, yelling at his brother, “Okay, I’ll trade rooms. You can have this one. I don’t want to sleep in the haunted room anymore.”
The girls all looked at each other in dismay. That had not gone how they had hoped at all.
“What do we do now?” asked Crissie.
“We could try yelling at him,” said Cassie. “Like we did when we showed them where the horses were.”
They all returned to Benjamin’s room again.
“Okay,” said Crissie. “On the count of three, repeat after me. One... two... three... Casper is alive!”
“Casper is alive!” they all shouted very loudly.
“He’s not alive though,” said Carla.
“Oh yeah,” said Crissie and Cassie together.
“Casper is dead,” shouted Callie in her loudest voice.
“That’s not helpful!” cried the other three.
Then there came a sudden CRASH from the kitchen.
