The broke trade shuttle Outcast is stuck on burned-out Raistor because its Lord-Dragon, Paris Clartor, is dying. Captain Terry Goodman finds a replacement: Lothar von Finsterherz, who performs a brutal Nest ritual, takes Paris’s power, and bonds with the ship. Lothar makes a one-jump transit to Ypsilon Station, but the moment they dock, the Inquisition surrounds them. Inquisitor Wilt Norcutt forces Goodman and his crew to work for her and orders them to help capture a fugitive named Adam Graf, warning that any tricks will destroy them.
