  Now this same girl is before me, her twinkling blue eyes behind those thin-framed square gsses of hers. Her well-kept golden hair is raised in a sidetail tied with a single white ribbon. Upon seeing our resident troublemaker and (me), her well-refined expression turns into that of smug recognition!

  She knows!

  There are a whole bunch of terms I didn't understand in that one. Valerie obviously knows Madison, why are they acting like its the first time they are meeting?
