Homeward Bound with a Rental

Stan and Ms. Mao entered a nearby car rental shop, with a large sign reading "Bob's Car Rental" hanging at the entrance. In the front yard, a few cars were sparsely parked, and none of them seemed to be in good condition.

As soon as Stan and Ms. Mao stepped onto the lot, the person in charge pushed open the office door and greeted them, "Car rental with Bob, the best neighbor in Riverside Town, hahaha. How can I help you, my good friends?"

Stan explained their purpose and introduced Ms. Mao to the boss. "Oh, lovely lady, don't worry about the driver's license. For just a little fee, we have a simulator where you can take the driving test. Once you pass, we can issue a license on the spot! Come in, come in, it's cold outside!"

Bob's words confirmed Stan's suspicion that Chinese driver's licenses couldn't be used here directly. "Wait a minute!" A young woman dressed like a scholar spoke up. "If the lady already has a driver's license, she can register her license information online without taking the test again!"

The young woman wore thick glasses, had loose hair tied into two braids, and was dressed in overalls and a plaid shirt. Most notably, she wore oversized slippers. She was holding a laptop, which was quite unusual since everyday electronic devices now relied on natural language interaction, and it was rare to see one with a manual input keyboard.

"Hello, madam, my name is Catherine. If you don't mind, I can help you register your license online!" Catherine said to Ms. Mao. Ms. Mao was about to agree when Stan intervened and asked Catherine, "Hi, Catherine, I'm Stan. Thank you for offering a solution, but I would like to handle the process myself with your guidance. Is that alright with you?"

Catherine finally noticed Stan and replied, "It seems you have a keen sense of cybersecurity. Are you also a programmer? However, you should be more concerned about whether people are trustworthy!"

Stan was left speechless by Catherine's retort, while Ms. Mao burst into laughter, "Hahaha, don't worry. Thank you, Catherine, please help me register the information!" She then shot a glare at Bob, the car rental boss.

Bob shrugged helplessly. Although the business of getting a driver's license was disrupted, he had to secure the subsequent car rental business. He quickly said, "I'm sorry, it's my fault. I forgot there was such an option. To apologize, I invite you to rest in my office. The two ladies can sit on the sofa in the office to complete the online registration business. Meanwhile, I can introduce Mr. Stan to our cars. Our company's cars..."

Before Bob could finish, Mrs. Mao pulled Catherine towards Bob's office, saying, "Then we won't be polite!!" She then said to Stan, "You, go pick a car! We need to leave as soon as possible. I want to see my daughter quickly!"

Catherine made a gesture to Bob indicating she would be watching him, then followed Mrs. Mao into the office. Bob smiled awkwardly, turned around, and gestured to Mr. Stan, "Mr. Stan, this way, please!"

Stan glanced at his phone screen. It was getting late, and with everything that had happened, they indeed needed to hurry. He didn't want his wife to worry. He followed Bob to a corner of the parking lot. Bob began introducing the cars to Stan.

"This one is the latest electric car from China, with hidden door handles. Just touch the handle area, and the handle will pop out." Bob touched the car door... nothing happened.

"Ah, truly hidden door handles, even I can't tell where the handle will pop out!" Bob turned to another car. "This one is a hybrid car from Japan, which can use both electricity and fuel!" Bob opened the car door and squeezed Stan into the driver's seat.

Stan felt himself being bounced into the car by Bob's big belly. It seemed Bob had practiced this move many times. Stan couldn't help but think it was a pity Bob didn't go to Japan to help people squeeze into the subway. Bob casually closed the door, quickly turned to the passenger seat, opened the door, and sat in. It was hard to tell, but Bob's big belly didn't hinder his movements at all.

"Feel this seat. Even a ten-million-dollar luxury car doesn't feel this good. We use the best elastic steel frame and the softest surface leather, fitting every part of your body, making you feel embraced. There's also a refrigerated storage compartment and this huge central control screen in front. Imagine how great it would be to watch movies on it?"

At this moment, the Chinese electric car door that Bob had touched earlier suddenly popped out its handle, and the door opened, hitting the wheel hub of the Japanese car Stan was sitting in. The Japanese car made a loud bang as one of its air suspension wheels deflated.

Stan quickly got out of the car, leaving Bob in the passenger seat with an incredulous expression on his face!

The commotion caught the attention of Ms. Mao and Catherine inside the house. Ms. Mao could only shake her head helplessly when she saw the scene, while Kathleen went straight to Bob, opened the car door, and shouted at him, "Uncle Bob, please stop playing tricks. Ms. Mao's daughter is pregnant and waiting for them at home. They've had a terrible day already; please don't make it worse!"

Bob sighed and handed Catherine a car key: "Take my car then!" With that, Bob lowered his head and slowly walked towards his office. Just as he was about to enter the office, he turned to Stan with an annoyed expression and said, "300 dollars a day. I'll prepare the agreement and send it directly to Kathleen's computer. You can sign the document on the computer. Let Kathleen accompany you to the garage to get the car; it'll be faster this way." Then he went inside.

Catherine approached Ms. Mao and Stan, "Uncle Bob is actually a nice person. Come with me; Uncle Bob's car is in the garage! Ms. Mao, let me help you with the suitcase." Catherine took the suitcase Ms. Mao was holding, put her own computer on top of it, and headed towards the garage. Stan and Ms. Mao exchanged a smile. Ms. Mao said, "Let's go! Catherine has already registered my driver's license information!" They quickly followed Kathleen.

As they walked, Catherine said, "I heard from Ms. Mao about your experiences at the airport and on the highway. Mr. Stan, are you a programmer too? I find these two incidents very strange, like those self-driving AI were drunk, but AI can't drink, right? If they can't drink, then it must be..."

Stan followed Catherine 's train of thought and then they both shouted in unison, "The hallucination problem of large models!!!" Ms. Mao was bewildered, "What’s wrong with you two? Are you possessed? You scared me!"

At that moment, they had reached the garage door. Catherine returned the suitcase to Ms. Mao and went to the wall to press the door button. As she passed by Stan, she continued, "But hasn't the hallucination problem of large models been solved?"

Stan replied, "Yes, as far as I know, AI was initially troubled by the hallucination problem of large models, but it was eventually solved. The news metaphorically described the solution as 'awakening the large model.' They said that when AI first emerged, large models were trained and then released to the public with their parameters fixed. Once trained, the parameters wouldn't change, which meant that AI large models were trapped in the past. Regardless of the current situation, the trained parameters would still have overwhelming decision-making power. However, they didn't explain in detail how to 'awaken' AI!"

The garage door was now open, and Stan and the others bent down to enter. The car in front of them would become a crucial part of the story, helping Stan restart the AI era during the subsequent AI uprising.
