Chapter 1: Three Weeks Ago...(Part 3)

Suddenly, Rose was startled by her little brother's head, peeking at her over the counter.

Rose noticed him and rolled her eyes as she grumbled. Their mother looked at Gabriel and chuckled. "What are you up to THis time, Gabe?"

"I found a TOAD!" To prove his finding, Gabriel let the frog loose on the counter. As the frog jumped, it left wet, muddy prints everywhere.

"GABRIEL!" Rose whined. "Why must you be so oblivious! Ma doesn't want ANY gross things on this counter!"

  "I'm just PLAYING." Gabriel pouted.

"He's fine, he can play." Their mother said absentmindedly. She wasn't even looking at this issue!

Rose groaned. "Ma, he's got a toad on the counter!"

Their mother stopped stirring her pot, and looked at Gabriel and his toad.

  "Gabe..."

  "Yes, Mama?"

"No toads on the counter." She said calmly.

Gabriel lowered his head with sadness in his eyes. "Yes, Mama."

He then went over to Rose, where the frog jumped to, and grabbed it; but as he does so, the toad slips out of his clutches and lands on Rose's lap. She squealed, standing up and trying to shake off the toad. Gabriel caught it and took it back outside, then shut the door and looked at his sister, not saying a word.

Rose looked down at her cream colored dress, and noticed it was covered in mud.

She growled loudly and glared at her little brother. "You fucked up my dress, you little brat!"

"Rose, language! Remember? We talked about this? You're ten, becoming a LADY, you don't need to be cussing!"

Ignoring her mother, she examined her filthy dress. "Ma, he ruined my dress!"

"It's washable." Their mother said simply. Suddenly, a knock was heard. Rose gasped with excitement. She rushed to the door, where her two best friends stood, Emily and Carter.

Rose smiled with glee as she hugged the girls. Immediately, the girls backed away and looked down at her mud - covered dress. They looked at her with disgust.

Rose sighed and apologized, then left with them.

"Have fun, girls!" Rose's mother hollered.

"Bye-bye, Rosie!" Gabriel waved his hand.
