Chapter 10: Shadows of the Past

The Xinglong glided silently through the cosmic expanse, its jade-inlaid corridors bathed in the soft luminescence of restored energy nodes. Li Wei stood on the command bridge, the weight of recent revelations pressing heavily upon him. The encounter with the ethereal entity had unveiled a looming threat—a shadow consuming star systems, an enemy of unimaginable power.

As he pondered their next move, the bridge's main console chimed, indicating an incoming transmission. The holographic display flickered to life, revealing the serene visage of Ambassador Shen from the Aurora's Embrace.

"Captain Li Wei," Shen began, their voice calm yet urgent, "our sensors have detected an anomaly on the outskirts of the Nebula of Echoes. It's... a ship, bearing the markings of the Xinglong's fleet."

Li Wei's brow furrowed. "Another vessel from our fleet? After all this time?"

"Indeed," Shen confirmed. "However, our scans indicate minimal life signs. We advise caution."

Determined to uncover the truth, Li Wei ordered the Xinglong to alter its course toward the anomaly. As they approached, the silhouette of a once-majestic ship emerged from the nebula's mists, its hull scarred and lifeless.

"Prepare a boarding team," Li Wei commanded. "I want to know what happened here."

The boarding party, led by Li Wei and accompanied by Navigator Chen, donned their exosuits and crossed the void between the ships. Upon entering the derelict vessel, a chilling silence greeted them. The air was stale, and the corridors bore signs of struggle— scorch marks, overturned equipment, and ominous stains.

"This ship... it's the Zhenbao," Chen whispered, recognizing the emblem etched on the wall. "It was part of our original fleet."

"What could have happened here?" Li Wei mused aloud.

As they ventured deeper, they reached the command center. The main console flickered weakly, its power reserves nearly depleted. Chen approached the terminal, attempting to access the ship's logs.

Stolen content alert: this content belongs on Royal Road. Report any occurrences.

"The data's heavily corrupted," Chen reported, fingers dancing over the controls. "But I might be able to retrieve fragments."

After several tense moments, the console emitted a series of distorted audio logs. The voice of the Zhenbao's captain crackled through the static:

"...encountered an unknown entity... crew exhibiting aggressive behavior... containment protocols failing... requesting immediate assistance..."

The recording ended abruptly, leaving a heavy silence in its wake.

"An unknown entity?" Li Wei repeated, concern etched on his face.

Chen nodded. "It seems the crew was compromised, possibly influenced or possessed, leading to their aggression."

"Could this be related to the shadow we were warned about?" Li Wei pondered.

"It's possible," Chen replied. "The entity might be a precursor or a manifestation of that greater threat."

Determined to gather more information, Li Wei ordered the team to retrieve the ship's black box and any salvageable data cores. As they made their way back to the Xinglong, a sense of unease settled over them.

Back aboard the Xinglong, the engineering team worked tirelessly to decrypt the recovered data. Hours later, they managed to piece together a visual log from the Zhenbao's final moments.

The holographic display projected a scene of chaos: crew members turning on each other, their eyes void of recognition, movements erratic and violent. In the background, a shadowy figure loomed, its form indistinct yet menacing.

"Pause," Li Wei ordered, scrutinizing the apparition. "Enhance that section."

The image sharpened slightly, revealing the entity's amorphous shape, tendrils extending from its core, ensnaring crew members and draining their vitality.

"This must be the unknown entity the captain mentioned," Chen observed.

"And it has the power to corrupt and control," Li Wei added grimly.

Ambassador Shen, who had joined them in the briefing room, spoke up. "This aligns with ancient records of the Eternal Devourer's harbingers—beings that sow discord and weaken defenses before the main entity arrives."

"Then the threat is imminent," Li Wei concluded. "We must accelerate our efforts to locate the remaining fragments of the Heart of Tianlong."

Shen nodded. "Agreed. Our scholars are analyzing star maps and historical texts to pinpoint potential locations. Time is of the essence."

As the meeting adjourned, Li Wei lingered, staring at the frozen image of the shadowy entity. The weight of his ancestors' legacy pressed upon him, but so did a burgeoning resolve.

"We will not let the past repeat itself," he vowed softly.

With renewed determination, the crew of the Xinglong prepared for the challenges ahead, united in their mission to thwart the encroaching darkness.
