Chapter 91

Taking a deep breath, I steadied myself before knocking on the door. “Professor Colress?”

I heard a muffled “Come in,” and the door to his office slid open. Stepping inside, I saw a very sleek, modern office. It had a cool grey-blue color scheme and looked remarkably well-polished. On one side of the room was a shelf filled with blueprints and a few odd half-built gadgets neatly piled away. The back wall was dominated by a large screen, which showed camera feeds from the various labs within the school. Opposite that was the desk Colress sat behind, and he waved me over to take a seat. Beside the man, a Magnezone and Klinklang hovered, almost eerie in how still they were.

The man himself was wearing a sharp white jacket matching his gloves, underneath which he had on a black shirt with a blue tie. Over his yellow eyes was a pair of thin-rimmed glasses. His yellow hair was slicked back, with an extra-long blue strand from the front styled to stick above the rest, looping around the back and curling around to the front once more. Still have no clue how he possibly stylizes that.

“Greetings, Miss Glitterati, it’s wonderful to see you again. I must ask as to why you requested this meeting, however.”

I saw no reason not to get straight to the point with Colress. “I’m looking to transform a small section of the Terarium to make it capable of producing Hisuian Sligoos and Goodras.”

“Fascinating concept. Why seek out me, though? You could have brought this to any researcher or just generally up with the school request system.”

“That’s true, but I would still need to find a scientist to help sponsor the project.” I’d looked into it, and while Blueberry Academy was quite accommodating of student projects, we still rightfully needed staff approval for stuff like this. “Considering you rediscovered Black Augurite and reintroduced Kleavors, I figured you’d be the best one for a project like this, Professor.”

He shook his head, and I was dismayed for a moment until he spoke up. “I’m not actually a Professor.”

“Wait, really? I mean, I’d still be honored to have your help, but why aren’t you? I mean, you’re- you! You resurrected Genesect and made DNA Splicers-” The faintest hint of a grimace crossed his face, and I stopped talking.

“I’m afraid those kinds of experiments left the administration - every administration - disinclined to grant me a Professorship,” he said calmly. “I don’t mind; I helped Team Plasma do terrible things, and I hardly need recognition for that. All I wish for is to bring out the power of Pokemon.”

“That’s a noble goal.” And from what I’ve heard, he’s recognized that true power in Pokemon comes from their bonds (though he still has contributed to the creation of many battle items and the like). Details which had been remarkably hard to uncover when I first investigated him, as if the world merely wished to forget the man… And with what he confirmed, it appeared the people in power did, while still utilizing his intellect.

A small smile graced his lips. “I like to think so. Now!” He declared, dramatically standing up. “What is your goal in this project? What do you hope to achieve through this?”

“Umm,” I stammered for a moment, taken aback by the sudden intensity before rallying. “I want to bring a piece of the past back to the present. To see what changes for the line of Dragons to gain the Steel Typing and how it varies from what we know of modern Goodras. And… it’s hardly the most selfless, but I’d like to prove that my discovery with Carbinks and Diancies wasn’t a fluke. That I have more to share with the world, scientifically speaking.”

He nodded his head. “Are you also looking to bring back Hisuian Zoroa-”

“No.” The man with the oddly styled hair blinked, and I cleared my throat. “I’m grateful for Phantasm on my team, but I hope you’ll understand me when I say some things don’t need to be rediscovered.”

Gratefully, he let the topic drop. “Very well then. Let’s discuss the outline. What are your initial thoughts on the project?” At my look, he added. “I’d be happy to sponsor you, but science is best approached with fresh perspectives! Lay out your plans, and I’ll offer some advice.”

He’s a surprisingly spirited man, Colress. "Methodical and logical, sure, but energetic as well," I thought to myself before pulling out a sheet of paper from my bag where I had the proposal outlined.

“My plan is to introduce Goomys to the Terarium and leave them in an iron-rich environment, ideally with a good amount of rain as well. I believe that the Canyon biome would work nicely for that, with the cliffs giving them a well-protected area that could be reshaped with those elements. Adding Iron supplements to their diet could also help in that regard.” Thank you, Most Evil Trainer, for that and this idea in the first place. “Iron in the rainwater and drinking water might help too-”

“Possibly, but you need to be careful; overdosing them with Iron could be toxic.” Colress sharply warned, and I winced. “Still, the plan looks solid overall. I know a number of locations that could work there.” He pressed a few buttons on his desktop, causing the screen behind me to change and show different scenes within the Canyon biome.

“The four locations on screen are those that I believe would be ideal for this. The first is the resting ground of some Beldums and Minior - the additional Iron content would have no impact on their growth and might even benefit them too. The next is where our wild Kleavors are; being from the same era as Hisuian Sligoos, they can likely deal with a similar environment to them. The penultimate choice would be this rather abandoned outcropping. No other Pokemon to move, and only a bit of terraforming to make it livable for the Goomys. Finally-”

“That one. That’s the one,” I declared.

“I see. That section has the most diverse and livable space to begin with, but also some fierce competition for space from Fraxures and Scythers. Why has that one caught your eye?” He asked, pushing up his glasses with a sharp gleam in his eyes. I wonder if he already knows and just wants me to verbalize it?

“It’s because they have tough competition there. Hisui was a harsh place, and Dragons in general need great pushes to get stronger. Goomys are no exception to that.”

“The Goomy line isn’t known for their aggression, however. Especially in this modern age. I’m afraid any Goomys the school could collect for the project might not fit your expectations.”

“If I could be given a bit of time off campus, I’m sure I could find the fiercest Goomys Paldea and Kitakami have to offer.” There will be a hassle in convincing the Dragon Tamers of Paldea to go along with the program, but I think the idea of a new Dragon/Steel Type will be enough to convince them.

He clapped his hands together suddenly. “Well then, it sounds like you have the beginnings of a marvelous plan. We’ll need to work out the details, but I can draft a proposal and submit it to the board. Hmm…” he said as he typed it out. “It appears there’s a slight snag.”

  “What’s that?”

“The proposal estimates have been automatically calculated as costing you around 3,000 Blueberry Points.”

“3,000!” I have only the first two hundred they gave us for the start of class!

“I’m sorry, but the project would be quite the undertaking,” he explained, listing off the different costs. Habitat protection, surveillance gear, installation costs, a small fee to let me leave for a few weeks to obtain the Goomys, hiring watchers to ensure no catastrophic clashes between the implanted Pokemon and the ones already there… The list just goes on.

I slumped in my seat. “I guess that’s all fair. Just didn’t think it would cost this much.” While I wasn’t sure of (and the teachers did not want there to be) an exact conversion between Pokedollars and BP, I knew that BP went for many times more than the former.

“Blueberry Quests are a great source of BP, from what I hear,” Colress offered. “I’ll also give you access to the ‘Red’ Quests,” he declared, dramatically pressing a button. Miles made an alert ‘beep’ from my phone a moment later. “Usually we wait until a student has proven themselves or they come to us in a group to tackle these more difficult quests, but given what I know of your battling and research skills, I’m certain you’ll be able to handle them.”

“Thank you pro- Colress,” I said, standing up. All of a sudden the door to his office opened up. A woman with wavy blonde hair strode in. She was wearing bright red pants and had a purple jacket on overtop a black turtleneck shirt. A mini corset wrapped around over both, emphasizing her curves.

“Ms. Briar?” I asked as my homeroom teacher, whom I’d seen once the day before, walked quickly to me, looming over.

“You asked Colress to look into Iron Moth before me?!”

“Uhh, we weren’t actually talking about Radiance at all.” That seemed to be the wrong thing to say, the young woman looking even more horrified at that.

“How can you not want to know more about a Legendary Pokemon you have? The mystery and myth surrounding them from over two hundred years ago! And I’m the only one with the complete version of the Violet Book!”

Well, I already actually know a bunch about the lore and how Radiance came to be here, but I can’t exactly explain that… “Wait, the regular Violet Book is missing something?” Colress was leaning in as well, his curiosity piqued too.

Ms. Briar smiled, a sharp thing. “There are pages regarding a few Pokemon at the end of his book that were never released to the public, and one that was heavily obscured. I believe this heavily obscured one to be in reference to the Pokemon lurking at the very heart of Area Zero! Ahem,” she regained her composure. “And I’d be happy to show it to you… if you can grant me an expedition to Area Zero.”

I almost took a step back from the sheer drive I felt coming off of my teacher, her hands clenched in tight fists, looking hopeful. “I’m not sure I can do that-”

“You’re the Champion, or a Champion Ranked Trainer, at least. If you ask, they’ll listen to you.” Damn, I don’t remember her being this pushy in the games. Then again, I only saw a bit of her in the first half of the DLC, so I don’t remember her much beyond her name.

Sighing, I shook my head. “Sorry, but it’s not quite that simple. Expeditions to Area Zero are pretty risky and take a lot to organize.” She opened her mouth, but I cut her off before she could raise the obvious point. “I happen to know that Professor Turo’s current expedition is wrapping up. He’ll be leaving Area Zero in the next few weeks at most, and the majority of the staff have left already.”

She looked crushed, and I felt terrible, but I hardened my resolve, not letting myself waver in the face of a sad, pretty woman. We don’t have the situation anywhere nearly controlled enough to hide the existence of the Paradox Machine yet. Maybe in the future. “We can look into hosting another expedition in a few years perhaps; what your Violet Book has in it could prove very insightful.”

“Couldn’t I just zip over there to join Professor Turo and expl-” she began before I shook my head. Even without knowing about trying to hide what he’d done, it was obvious that a full expedition couldn’t just be tacked onto the end of Turo’s research, a fact which became clear to her as she thought about it more. Ms. Briar still wasn’t happy though, groaning before nodding in understanding. “Do try to keep my offer in mind for the future, at least.”

Colress chimed in. “I would be interested in joining as well, if you’d have me. Terastalization presents such tantalizing options to empower Pokemon.”

“Well, in that case you’re going to love the ‘Stellar’ Tera Type Professor Turo discovered.” His eyes widened before he stopped himself, thinking.

“That does indeed sound interesting, especially with that idea the head of the academy has been looking into.” I cocked my head to the side, and he explained.

“I heard that the Director is looking for massive Tera Crystals to install a structure within the Terarium that would let the students Terastalize their Pokemon. I believe if you could help with that, you might be able to pay off all the costs necessary for your own experiment,” he advised.

“Oh right, Cyrano mentioned that! I think I’ve got the blueprints right here,” Briar said, pulling out her Rotom Phone and showing me the plans. The blueprints depicted a giant sphere being placed atop the Terarium, filled with Tera Crystals (alongside other liquids and materials I didn’t know much about).

  Stolen story; please report.

“Hmm,” I thought about it for a moment. Okay, this is actually one where I do need to make a decision as a Champion, without any complicating factors like hiding Turo’s transgressions. On the one hand, that’s a fairly large chunk of Tera Crystals, and those are a national resource. On the other, increasing knowledge of Terastalization around the world will help. Plus, Blueberry Academy does share a special relationship with Uva, and by extension, Paldea. As a Champion, I had also been informed of certain classified information (mostly just about Turo and his research because that was all I was looking into at the moment) and discovered that Paldea had mined massive amounts of Tera Crystals in anticipation of the Tera Orb rollout. While the amount they were looking for to affect the Terarium would not be insignificant, we could still afford it.

“I’ll look into that,” I replied earnestly. Even without the idea of it giving me the points I’d need to run my own experiment, I’d be interested in this. With Terastalization more common, it’ll make battles more interesting and epic with Enhancement Effects likely allowed here. I want to see what Geeta and the rest of the League have to say before I make any promises, however.

“Excellent!” Colress declared, and I again resisted the urge to jump from how he could switch from calm to excitable so easily. “I have some paperwork to attend to at the moment, but I look forward to seeing your projects in the future. Feel free to seek me out in the labs or my office if you wish to discuss anything more about science.”

I opened my mouth to point out how broad a topic ‘science’ was before closing it. This is Colress; he probably could help instruct me on any scientific field I’d care to name. “Thank you, I said instead, bowing slightly and getting up to leave.

Briar marched beside me. “Why wait on exploring the marvels of Blueberry Academy? I can give you an in-depth tour of the labs right now!”

  “Oh wow, than-”

“And get a detailed scan of your Iron Moth,” she muttered.

“-k you…” I trailed off, rolling my eyes. “Fine, I don’t see a problem with that. Radiance already got scanned by Jacq for his Pokedex App,” I informed her as we walked down the hall, causing her to screech to a halt for a moment.

“Jacqqqqqqq!” She cried out in anguish. “How could my ex beat me to the research of one of Area Zero’s legendary Pokemon? And then not even tell me?!”

“You two dated?” I inquired, and she immediately calmed down, somewhat undercutting her demonstration of rage earlier.

“Oh yes, he’s a bright man. As we got called to different countries, we decided long-distance wouldn’t work. Still annoyed he didn’t even call me about scanning Iron Moth though,” the woman pouted, crossing her arm under her ample chest.

“He’s probably busy with the Pokedex App stuff?” I tried to defend him, but she just sniffed haughtily. Yeah, I don’t think that’s going to help; he really could have just called her.

As we walked down to the labs, I asked, “So, what’s up with you wanting to know so much about Area Zero that you stalked me down after class?”

She stumbled for a moment before quickly righting herself. “I wouldn’t have had to chase after you if you hadn’t run off the instant class ended!” She pointed out, her eye twitching slightly. “As for why I’m so interested in it, the Violet Book was written by my great-great-great grandfather.”

I let out a small ‘Ahh’ of recognition. That explains the book and her interest in Area Zero. She clarified as much with her next words, her usual exuberant energy dropping down.

“Professor Heath went on one of the greatest missions of all time. An exploration into the heart of Area Zero, a feat that maybe only emperors of ancient Paldea matched - and none of them managed to return. Yet when he did, Heath was ridiculed. The public determined his findings to be ‘nonsense,’ despite not having any better idea as to what was within Area Zero.”

We had reached the labs, but my teacher stopped outside, continuing her explanation. “The ridicule died down over the years, but that was well after Heath passed away. Even to this day, people would call me crazy for believing everything he wrote in his Violet Book. At least, until you showed up with your Iron Moth.” Her eyes sparkled as she stared down at me, and I shifted slightly.

Damn, I feel bad for not letting her go down now… But then again, the Paradox Pokemon currently contained down there wouldn’t be the ones Heath saw. Which raises even more questions as to how he saw them in the first place, but- questions for another time.

“I see. In that case, though, why haven’t you released the information about his full book?”

Briar frowned. “In the past it was due to not wanting to open up a whole new wave of criticism and derision to be aimed at my family. As for now? Well, I want to be the one who confirms Heath’s findings. That might be selfish of me, but that’s why I want to go on that expedition and come back with evidence related to Area Zero. To restore honor to my family- gosh, that sounds rather dramatic, doesn’t it?”

“Eh, a little, but hardly unwarranted. There’s so much we don’t know of the past, and this sounds pretty important to you. I'm sure you'll find out the truth someday." Perhaps I'll even be able to help you with that somewhere down the line. Things are still far too fraught at the moment, but I can't deny my own curiosity with Area Zero.

“Thank you, Miss Glitterati. Now, we were about to begin our exploration of the labs, were we not?” She opened the door, granting me entrance within. The lab was a large, clean, light blue room, with several different machines and materials piled within. There were a few researchers in white lab coats that briefly turned our way before nodding at Briar and going back to their work. Off to one side was a Musharna, her fog being stored and bottled by a young man who placed it in a stack with several other bottles.

“Welcome to our materials lab. This is one of several we have on this floor.” She guided me over to a desk where I saw discarded Exeggcute shells and Axew tusks, alongside many other bits and pieces. “Pokemon have some of the strongest, most durable bodies in the world, with many unique properties that cling to them even after some pieces are separated from the Pokemon in question.” My teacher picked up a long, white piece of down.

“This is Swanna down, remarkably water resistant. With our synthesis machines, we can convert this material into waterproof clothing and gear used by some of our diving clubs. And that’s just one example!” Briar eagerly showed me through some of the other materials they were creating, everything from foldable gliders to circuit boards.

“All of the materials are ethically sourced, of course. Picked up as discards from those within the Terarium or from Pokemon who volunteer, and in ways that won’t hurt them.” Briar stressed as we left the lab.

“Of course.” It seems obvious that they wouldn’t, but after Plasma I bet everyone is super keen to make sure it’s known that all the Pokemon are okay.

There were a few more laboratories on this level, which showed off the different materials they worked with. We checked out the lab where Colress had discovered how to create Black Augurite, a chunk of it sitting in a fancy display case near the back. That can turn a Scyther into a Kleavor. I think they’re cool, and I’ve heard of a lot of students here evolving their Scythers into Kleavors, but that might just be hopping on the newest thing. Scizor are awesome too, though, and I don’t think evolution really makes a Scyther any stronger, just changes the areas they are stronger in.

The tour continued to the next floor, with a bunch of different labs. Some of the heavier machinery was absent, replaced by relatively more delicate arrays and measuring equipment. I also noted more Pokemon wandering throughout this level (not that this was an uncommon sight; most rooms and hallways in the academy had at least one small Pokemon out and about). Some of the Pokemon, like a Reuniclus I saw floating by, were the ones conducting the tests themselves.

“We do experiments here to test the results of what we make and just to measure the capabilities of Pokemon in general,” Briar informed me as we passed by a room where a Gurdurr was lifting a heavy weight, one of the researchers mumbling something about an “8% increase over previous gains from the improved Macho Brace.”

“I see,” I said, sidestepping around a rushed researcher who wasn’t paying attention to where they were going and nearly barreled into me. “Is it always this busy?”

Briar laughed. “Usually more so, but the rest of the school is focused on the returning students right now. This is one of the largest research facilities in the world, even discluding the sections used just for the students! Blueberry Academy is constantly seeking new ways to innovate. Speaking of which,...”

She took me to a smaller lab. There wasn’t anyone using it at the moment, with a desk in the back and a large space cleared in the center with an arena-like barrier (currently inactive). On the desk sat a strange device. In the corner there was a glass chamber with some testing machines inside and a computer just outside.

“Here’s where we get a combination of what materials and experimentation can do,” she said, proudly waving a hand at the odd handheld device. It had an antenna sticking out of it and a few buttons. “This here is a personal invention of mine, a Synchro Machine. It will let you link up your feelings with that of your Pokemon’s.”

“... Like the Aura bond with my Lucario or a psychic bond with my Gothorita? Or just like telepathy, like my Diancie uses? Or just, you know, asking them how they're doing and listening to them?” She looks put out at my questions.

“You know, most people can’t communicate so freely with their Pokemon.”

  “Wait, really?”

The older woman looked incredulously at me. “Yes, really! How can you not know that?”

I pushed my fingertips together awkwardly. “Well, I didn’t really travel with any other humans on my journey, and then I became Champion and…” Now I’m here. This is honestly going to be pretty weird.

It seemed pretty odd that all of the other people I knew well were like me and had decent understanding/communication with their Pokemon until I remembered who they all were. I helped train Arven and Cyan, so they learned from me, and of the ones I learned from… well, Dendra, Tulip, and Hassel aren’t exactly the average when it comes to Trainers.

Eager to change the subject and wipe away the look of pity from her face, I asked Ms. Briar, “So do you need someone to test that device for you? Or compare it with the bonds I have with my Pokemon?”

“No, at least to the former… But any testing of it will have to happen later; the device isn’t nearly ready for such tests. No, I just wanted to show you an example of the kinds of things we work on here!”

“Cool,” I said as she walked us over to the glass chamber, opening it up.

“Here was the portion of experimental testing I was hoping you could help me with. Jacq might have done a basic scan, but I’d love to try some in-depth testing with your Iron Moth.”

In response, I released Radiance out. “Hey, Ms. Briar here wants to do some tests and check out how you compare to the legends. You okay with that?” They beeped pridefully, and I smiled, turning back to my teacher. “I think they’re okay with it. It’ll just be non-invasive stuff, like seeing how much power they can output and the like, right?”

“That’s correct. Maybe a few tests to see how that ‘Booster Energy’ device works as well,” Briar said as she directed Radiance inside the chamber and began hooking up a couple of wires attached to sticky pads. As she set things up, I asked something that had been on my mind.

“Hey, I have to ask, why didn’t you stay in Paldea? Sorry if I’m prying, but given you wanted to explore Area Zero…”

She adjusted some of the sensors on Radiance before answering. “It might seem odd, but Cyrano scouted me and offered me a teaching position here. It seemed like a great deal, and I figured by advancing academically here, I’d have enough clout to be able to request to lead an expedition into Area Zero in the future easily enough. Of course I never could have imagined that Turo would lead his own expedition within it just a year after I accepted Cyrano’s offer. Or that he would take Jacq with him!”

Calming herself, Briar readied the machine. “We’re ready to go. First test, please use a Discharge without the boost from your item.” Radiance let out a shockwave without hesitation, the light within the glass enclosure flashing. Whatever material the sensors are made of must be very durable as well. I wonder if that also gets constructed here or if it is just something generally durable that can be made and bought commonly across regions?

The larger machine was protected from any shocks by a lightning rod set up within the booth, so it could analyze the power my Pokemon had. Whatever the result was, Briar seemed quite happy with it, almost cackling with glee. The next few tests passed in a similar fashion, with Radiance happy to show off their power. The Booster Energy readings seemed to really excite Briar, and she let the Paradox Pokemon out of the testing chamber and onto the arena, where they were able to show off their enhanced speed.

Briar looked amazed at first before frowning and looking at some of the less accurate but still state-of-the-art general sensors around the room. “Why did Radiance not get more powerful? I mean, the speed is… astounding, truly. It’s like they’re using Double Team simply as an aftereffect of their motion! But during your battle against The Great and Powerful Turtle, Radiance got much stronger from the Booster Energy, and nowhere near this fast.”

“Yeah, it’s something we discovered when training. Radiance is my fastest Pokemon, so I wanted to lean into that and had them train their speed even more. We found after a certain point, the Booster Energy - and any use of Electric Terrain, which the item is based on - started increasing their speed, not their elemental power. I believe that their Ability boosts whatever they are strongest at.”

“Impressive! So this Ability is what powers Iron Moth… What’s it called? Do you think the other strange Pokemon from Area Zero possess it too?” Gah! Too close!

I took a step back. “Uhh, I call it Quark Drive, so that’ll probably be what it gets recorded as… alongside Iron Moth’s being called ‘Radiance.’”

“What.” Her voice was flat and icy, and even knowing it was coming, I cringed.

“Sorry, but that’s what I called them in the match against Turtle, and since everyone online heard that, they’ve been all, ‘Man, I want my own Radiance,’ and ‘Radiance is the coolest Pokemon!’ Stuff like that. Popular opinion will probably drown out what was originally recorded.” My Paradox Pokemon was looking far too smug off to the side, preening a little at the idea of any future Iron Moths being named after them.

Hurriedly, I continued. “As for others possessing that Ability, it might be likely. The Pokemon within the Violet Book all share certain characteristics in their bodies. I don’t think it’s indicative of Typing since Iron Moths are Fire and Poison, nothing to do with Steel, so them sharing an Ability wouldn’t be too far-fetched.”

She looked at me strangely before shaking her head and sighing. “Fine, but if you catch any other Pokemon from Area Zero, you better make sure they have the right names! Or maybe I should just catch them to make sure. My first Pokemon being one of the ones Heath recorded…”

“You don’t have any Pokemon? Sorry,” I added after a second. “That was a bit rude of me. Just, it feels weird not to have a companion.” I stroked the back of Radiance’s head as I spoke (which was the only place Radiance really enjoyed contact or the like; they could be pretty prickly even after everything we’d worked out, and while they tolerated the rare hug, they weren't too into that much stuff).

“I wanted to get one once I’d solved my ancestor’s great work. It felt like… it was a cloud hanging over me. I wouldn’t want that to weigh on my Pokemon as well. So if you want to help me…” She trailed off with a bright grin on her face.

“Geez, geez, you’re shameless. I already promised to help, and I will! Now, let’s get back to the testing.”

We went through another battery of tests and then followed it up by explaining the Booster Energy to her.

“Sounds good, a fascinating way to trigger a terrain-based Ability. I wonder if Skiddo’s Grass Pelt could be triggered by something similar? Colress would probably know best. You should ask him to give it a look later and see if there’s anything he can improve in it. Oh, and before I forget,” she had her Rotom fly up, Miles matching them, and there was the buzz and alert sound of a transfer.

“You’re giving me 200 BP?! Whoa, thanks.”

“No, thank you. Today I got one step closer to achieving my treasure. Hopefully those points will help you in obtaining your treasure soon too.”

I smiled, the very ‘Paldean’ banter covering up a bit of discontent I felt at her words. I’ve got a self-assigned goal now of bringing back Hisuian Goodras, but that’s hardly the same as a ‘treasure’ to seek or some apocalyptic disaster to stop. Right now I’m just sort of… existing day to day.

I shook myself out of my funk, smiling more brightly as I left the science rings. There’s nothing wrong with just exploring and enjoying the world for what it is.
