Interlude: Saints of Kelllwan

My name is Felix Kjaersgaard. Historian and priest of Kelllwan. Here, I have gathered everything the Relif, Kelllwan's holy book, says about saints for the use of those priests who desire it. I have found further secondary sources that I have added to this collection. I hope that this will become the First Book of Saints.

As always, it is difficult to discern when these events took place, but from what I know, no saints walk Kalish anymore. I might be mistaken, but I do not know this for certain.

Excerpt from the Third Book of Diplomacy

Victor Nielsen writes to Mek’s nobles.

v.1: You who see yourselves above the laws of the Empire, I now warn you. Become part of a greater community so that we may stand together against common enemies. For just as Ewen has his Grandmasters, so too does Kelllwan have his saints.

v.2: You who only care for the mandates of magic have likely scarcely heard of them, but let me tell you of their status and why they have been offered a seat as Kelllwan’s equals in the Iron Heart.

v.3: The mighty Johan Heshe will always be remembered in Permersland. A man without noble title, regarded by many as merely a boy when he defended his homeland.

v.4: According to legend, Johan is said to have stood alone against a horde of monsters from Leltho, armed only with the blessing of a Kelllwan priest. Alone, he defeated these foes, and when Kelllwan saw this, he bestowed upon Johan Heshe the sword Flame Tongue.

[I have taken the liberty to trim down the following threats to Mek's national security.]

v.341: Kelllwan and the Empire reward their allies, as the dwarf, Leif Tang, discovered. He is said to hail from The Axe Crack, where he and his battle brothers led a group known as Blood of Iron. Renowned for their incredible endurance, this group fought directly for the thane.

v.342: Leif Tang, however, was elevated to sainthood when he defeated Tross in single combat.

v.343: Yes! The Tross! Even the weak and frail elves must have heard of the orkish beast.

[Note: I have not been able to find any information about this ork, nor do I know of it.]

v344: While Leif Tang had arms beyond arms, Kelllwan, praise be his name, granted him glory and bounty: the Helm of Bloods would be Leif's eternal glory!

[The letter continues by demanding that Mek align with the Empire. Mek has refused to align itself with the Empire, even in Modern times.]

  Instructions for the Southern Gate

v.1: Along with the next legion, two saints and one prophet will be sent.

v.2: The prophet’s task will be to document and send information back to the Empire. He will go by the name Victor Nielsen.

v.3: Victor Nielsen has been our archmage here in Salezstand for many years. His magic and ingenuity are unmatched in the Empire. Ten years ago, he received a vision from Kelllwan, revealing the fate of the world to him.

v.4: Since then, he has been our Prophet and Kelllwan’s Saint.

v.5: In addition, we send Malene Jensen and Peter Noergaard.

v.6: Malene Jensen is a warrior from the Northern Glaciers. She is as harsh and cold as her homeland. She was proclaimed a saint by Kelllwan’s messiah.

v.7: It is said that no weapon can break her skin, a truth no one has yet had the chance to test.

[Note: The instructions then describe the best way to deploy Malene Jensen in an attempt to keep monsters from escaping Leltho]

v.51: Peter Noergaard is noble by birth. He earned his sainthood in the Battle of A’kastin.

v.52: He helped protect the land against a horde of orcs who sought to seize it from the Empire. For this, he was awarded the shield Face of Judgment.

Stolen content alert: this content belongs on Royal Road. Report any occurrences.

v.53: So do not fear. For the Empire’s mightiest heroes are on their way to aid you.

[The letter concludes with information on the most optimal strategy, and information on how the supply lines will be coordinated.]

Excerpt from a speech given during the Great Demon War by General Jens Danner

v.1: Behold how Kelllwan smiles upon us.

v.2: That he would send not only his son but also his saints to our aid.

v.3: On this day, in this dark time, we stand together with three resurrected saints.

v.4: YES! You should not fear! Kelllwan himself broke the divine will of the world!

v.5: He wrestled these souls from the Whirlpool of Souls!

v.6: So do not fear! For the divine is with you in this hour!

v.7: Among you, you will find Halfdan Ytterdal, an elf who has never missed his mark.

v.8: He is one of the few elves still able to sing to crystals, which led to his elevation to sainthood.

[Note: One of the men in the army heckled the fact that they had an elf among them. The man was promoted to front-line flagbearer. It is unknown if he survived the initial clash with the demon army, wielding only a flag and no weapons.]

v.24: Today, we also stand with Artur van Lankveld, a warrior so fierce and strong.

v.25: As you likely know, Artur van Lankveld is renowned for his ruthless fighting style with the mace Tryx.

v.26: Not only does Saint van Lankveld wield this mace with honour and glory, but his family's generations have helping the Empire more than most.

[What follows is a speech about how the van Lankveld family is technically linked with the royal bloodline. This claim has been disputed by many scholars, however the church of Kelllwan is still of the position that casting doubt upon a saints true nature is a blasphemous and heretical action.]

v.85: As such, you may even consider that among our ranks the Emperor himself is standing!

v.86: The last saint among our midst is Ejvind Kjaeldgaard, a warrior wielding weapons of the strongest dwarven steel.

v.87: He was elevated to sainthood after defending his land in battle against none other than Ballator, son of an Archdemon.

v.88: While this saint was slain by Ballator in a single strike, know that this will not happen again!

[The speech continues with various other inspiring quotes that no doubt lead to the army being able to stand against the demons for 4 consecutive battles over 24 hours.]

Excerpt from the Third Book of Prophecies

[This passage comes from the Red Guard, and though it was written by dark elves, I have verified it as true. I have, however, been unable to find other original texts. This means the following does not give Kelllwan the praise he deserves.]

v.1: Sisters of the tunnels, know your enemies, and know their deaths. For Kelllwan, coward and fool that he is, sent four of his saints to our city.

[I have taken the liberty to trim a rather large passage arguing that the dark elves’ attack on a city with three orphanages was just, and that it was honorable for the Red Guard to hunt the orphans in the streets.]

v.16: And so, to take back the bodies we had justly seized from that human city, which could not even defend itself, Kelllwan sent his saints.

v.17: They moved through the tunnels. At their front went Commissar Andrup. A former captain of the city watch whom Kelllwan chose to exalt. The fact that she was their only woman should tell you all how foolish Kelllwan is.

v.18: She bore the Cloak Winter Frost, which we, regrettably, failed to wrest from her.

v.19: Behind her walked Kal Thoftgaard, the largest human any of our people have seen. His head scrabbing against the ceiling of our tunnels. The scribes of Blue House claim he was half troll.

v.20: What we know is that he wielded an anchor as a weapon, which he called the “Hook of Life.”

v.21: In the shadows slipped a figure we first believed to be one of our own from Green House. But when Kal addressed this living shadow, it became clear it was the one they called Death-Patrol Andersen, who wore the “Mantle of Night” and could not be seen.

v.22: Last but not least stood Officer Pilgaard, a young lad who had been a merchant, drawn into the Permersland Civil War for reasons unknown. He wore the boots “Death March,” which made him the fastest human we have ever seen.

[The text ends here with the dark elves lying in ambush and attacking the saints across several engagements. The saints fought their way to the dark-elven city and were stopped only when Ira the Red Ilsher was forced to intervene.]
