The scene opens on a bright day with clear skies, it's peaceful. Katsuo Okada, a young ruly boy. He sits down in his room of his cozy home, looking for a game to play on his monitor.
His mother, Hanae, opens the door and peaks her head in.
Hanae: Sighs. “You’ve been on that computer all day. And you’re not even playing anything right now.”
Katsuo: Stretches and turns his chair to face her. “There’s not much to do, I’m bored.”
Hanae: “The dishes haven’t been done, entertain yourself with that for me.” Walks away.
Katsuo sighs to himself knowing he walked himself into that one, he heads to the kitchen and starts on the dishes. His father, Kaito, speaks up from across the room.
Kaito: “We need eggs for dinner later, make sure to grab some okay?”
Katsuo: “I’m doing every chore now? Can’t Kaori do that?”
Kaito: Smiles. “She can help you with that.”
Katsuo finishes with the dishes, he heads upstairs to his sister's room and knocks.
Kaori: “Come in.”
Katsuo: Opens the door and enters her room. “Dad wants you to help me pick up some eggs.”
Kaori: Groaned. “You don’t need help doing that, it’s one thing.”
Katsuo: “Just get your shoes on.” Exits her room and heads outside the house.
Hanae walks out after him.
Hanae: “Honey, you almost forgot your watch.” Hands over a GPS watch that goes around your wrist, it’s used for warning people that a Koflimpa is nearby.
Katsuo: ”I don’t even need it, I’ve never seen one anyways. Are you sure they even exist?” Sighs.
Hanae: Puts it on his wrist and sighs. “Don’t say such ridiculous things. Be safe.”
Around ten minutes later, the siblings are walking down the side of the street to the nearest grocery store.
Kaori: “Are you excited for this weekend?” She looks over at him with a smile.
Katsuo: “The cruise? It should be fun, it’s only for a day though.”
Kaori: Huffed. “Only? Not enough for you? You must go on cruises all the time then.”
Katsuo: Mocks her a bit quietly. “Shut up. I meant we’ve been on a day-long cruise before and you remember how that went.”
They reached the store and are now looking around for the eggs.
Kaori: ”Yeah but that was a one time thing, this’ll be a better experience.”
Katsuo: “I hope you’re right.” Grins. “Well as long as they have that same steak like last time it won’t be too bad.”
Kaori: Huffs and kicks his leg. “I swear you only think with your stomach!”
Katsuo: Grabs a carton of eggs. “This should be good, let’s get out of here.”
Stolen from its rightful author, this tale is not meant to be on Amazon; report any sightings.
As they reach the self checkout, Kaori takes out her wallet. Katsuo scans the eggs, it beeps once but is followed by another beep after that.
Kaori: “Hey wait, you scanned it twice.”
Katsuo: Looking at the register. “No it only says once?“
They hear two more beeps.
Katsuo: He glanced down at his watch, one large dot on the tracker, nearby. “What the hell…”
Kaori: She looks at hers, it’s the same. “What does it mean? There’s not actually one nearby right?”
They feel a sudden earthquake, rather powerful.
Katsuo: “Kaori we’ve gotta go!” Grabs her hand and runs out of the store, trying not to be caught inside during an earthquake like that.
The building begins to collapse.
Kaori: “What’s happening…?”
Right in front of them, a sinkhole appears in the street, one large fleshy hand reaches out of it. Striking a sense of confusion and horror into the kids.
One singular Koflimpa climbs out of the hole, they can’t believe their eyes considering they’ve never actually seen one before. Its distraught and distorted flesh is dark colored and disgusting. It looks about 14 meters tall.
Katsuo: “Oh my god… Let’s go!“ Running with his sister, causing the Koflimpa to take notice and begin moving after them.
More beeping can be heard from their watches, larger earthquakes. It’s happening so fast they don’t realize this is a Koflimpa invasion, and there are dozens just like the one chasing them.
Katsuo: “Kaori keep up!” He keeps looking back to make sure she’s right behind him.
Kaori: “We’re going to the shelter! Right?!” Desperately following him.
Katsuo: “We need to get mom and dad first! They’re still at home!”
The Koflimpa behind them seems to only be walking, giving them some time. Kaori mentioned a shelter, each city in the planet has designated shelters for every district in it to ensure the protection of civilians until the KDF handles the Koflimpa. Each is large enough to hold around 5,000-10,000 people. Despite the initial shock they, just like everyone else, have been trained from birth how to act in the event of an attack.
Kaori: “That’s the opposite direction! We can’t go back there!”
Katsuo: Grabs her wrist and drags her along. “Not if we go this way… we’re not leaving them like that.”
Kaori: “They would tell us to get to the shelter!”
Katsuo: “Just come on!” He drags her all the way, refusing to let go and motivated by the fear of losing her.
Sprinting as fast as he can while making sure she can keep up, he turns down a street leading directly to their house.
Katsuo: “We’re almost there…!”
And with that line they finally approached what was supposed to be their home. Not anymore, what was left was a pile of rocks and rubble, not even remotely close to what they grew up in. A wreck.
Kaori: “Katsuo…” Worried, where are their parents?
Katsuo: “No…” He lets go of her wrist and takes a few slow steps towards the crushed building.
Kaori: Looking back down the street. “Katsuo we need to go… it’s getting close.”
Katsuo: Completely frozen, a look of horror and dejection on his face as he notices… he’s standing in a pool of blood that was splattered across the ground. ”I-“
Kaori: “Katsuo…” Her eyes locked on the monstrous creature getting closer. She shakes his shoulder. “Come on!”
Katsuo: In this terrifying moment all he could hear was his own heart thumping, “Thump… Thump.” Its speed rises as his gaze follows the blood, to what he can instantly make out to be possibly the worst thing he’s ever seen. An arm, on the ground, his eyes widening thinking it’s already horrible until he realizes who it belongs to. He can see his mothers ring on one of the fingers. ”Ah- AHHHHRGGGGGHHAAA!!!” He backs up and falls to the ground in pure horror.
Kaori: ”Katsuo!” She looks to him then spots the arm as well, her eyes widening in terror and letting out a screech. “Th- that’s not her… that’s not her, we’ve gotta go-“ As the Koflimpa starts sprinting, she attempts to drag her brother. “Come on…!”
Time slows down for both of them the very moment she is ripped away by the beast, it happens so fast but it feels like an eternity for Katsuo which makes him come to his senses.
Katsuo: Yells in fear, completely taken over by instinct. ”Kaori! No!” He reaches to grab her but misses anyways, it’s absolute now. He can’t do a thing to stop this.
Kaori: “N-no… please!” Her eyes tear up as she struggles in the Koflimpa's grip.
Katsuo: ”Let go of her! STOP!” Rushes to fight it off helplessly but the beast kicks him into the debris of the crushed house and he surrenders to his body's injuries.
Kaori: “AUUGHRRR!” She struggles one last time as she is bitten in half, blood bursting from her body right in front of her brother's eyes, she is killed horrifically and brutally.
Katsuo: His mind stirs before he comes back to reality, witnessing the death of probably the last of his family. He can’t utter a word, nor a tear of sadness. He’s frozen in shock with his eyes showing true trauma.
The boy doesn’t say a word, he can only hope the monster the ate his sister doesn’t come for him next. The Koflimpa in front of him swallows his sisters lifeless body and remains there a few endless moments. Before turning towards Katsuo and reaching to grab him.
Katsuo: “n-no…” Timid and close to silent, he is afraid.
The hand reaching for him is blown off, drenching Katsuo in the blood of the beast. To his surprise a soldier in full armor flies by with a signature jet pack and fires his rifle at the Koflimpa, it’s a KDF Soldier.
Katsuo: Let out an exhale softly, taken aback and relieved at the same time.
Minari: “Kid you alright?” Landing on the ground and pulling him from the rubble as one of his comrades fights off the Koflimpa.
Katsuo: Stands up slowly, his leg hurting from the hit he received from the beast, his eyes glance back over at his mothers arm.
Minari: Looks at the arm and his expression grimaces. He proceeds to guide Katsuo away. ”Yuta, I’m escorting this one back to the evac!”
Yuta: He finished off the Koflimpa with a shot to the eye and acknowledged his comrades' words. “Copy that, get him out of here.” Flies away with his rocket pack.
[Katsuo is grabbed by the soldier.]
Minari: “Hold on tight.” Lifts off and holds Katsuo as he flies.
Katsuo: Still in shock but gasps at the lift off and holds on desperately.
(Katsuo: I’m not sure… my head was still clouded from the moment, but for some reason I knew things were different this time. Not just for me, and this wasn’t an average Kofli attack.)
He finally opens his eyes and looks at the ground beneath them, buildings crushed and some on fire. People running around frantically. Bodies on the ground. He notices a Koflimpa picking up a man.
Man: “No! No! NOOOO!!” He’s eaten, his head bitten off.
(Katsuo: Of course things were different… watching that man die reminded me of the difficult truth I was putting off. My family is dead, the home I knew is gone. Reduced to dust and blood. The enemy of mankind has untold horror stories that came with their existence.)
They land on the ground at the edge of the city, numerous helicopters and evac jets being packed with civilians.
Minari: “Hey, I’ve got one right here!” Handing Katsuo over to another soldier, one who is helping evacuate the city. He then backs away and zips off towards the city, returning to his mission to fight.
Katsuo is packed into a helicopter with other men women and children that also survived.
(Katsuo: But we thought… We thought that’s what they were, stories. It never registered that this is what they were, our natural enemy that kills without remorse. Monsters…)
