Cobolt - 3

Later that same evening, Cobalt strolled down to the dungeons. The dark pathways dimly lit by torches placed sparsely throughout the halls. He stopped infront of a wooden door. He grabbed the keys hanging above the entryway and unlocked it with a single click. Cobalt entered and stood before the bloodied Crimson Guard. The man was shaking, steam left his lips. He had fresh bandages on his wounds despite being imprisoned. The guard cowered in the fetal position on his side. Cobalt leaned down resting his weight on the balls of his feet.

Cobalt placed his index finger over his own mouth.“Now I’m going to ask you some questions, and if you tell me what I want to hear then I’ll let you go, sounds fair?”

The man nodded quickly, his faced moved up and down so fast his double chin wobbled. The cell was dark with only one open window high above the bed frame, which was also the only source of light. It was a tease, no matter how hard he tried to grab the ledge, it was always just out of reach. He could hear everything, the birds chirping, horses neighing, freedom was so close he could smell it.

“Alright, let’s start with what happened, who is this girl with the White hair, where did she come from?”

The man paused, he swallowed though his throat was drier than the Sahara. When he parted his lips to speak, his chest forced him into a dry coughing spell.

“Water-ter please” he begged, he was barely able to say those two words. Cobalt rolled his eyes. If the man couldn’t talk what use would he be. He unlatched his waterskin, and handed it to the poor man. He drowned himself in the cool water. He swallowed as much as he could, before Cobalt snatched it from his grip.

“That’s enough, now tell me what you know” he commanded. He secured the pouch back on his side. The guard wiped his mouth using the back of his hand, dried blood smeared across his face.

The tale has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the violation.

“I don’t know my lord, it was my first time seeing her she came out of nowhere” he said, jittery. His lips quivered, he was terrified by the look on the Prince’s face.

Cobalt furrowed his brows.“Tsk, tsk, I thought I made the rules clear,” Cobalt stood up, he wrapped his arms behind his back, “I want to help you I really do, but you’re not making this easier for yourself.”

“I swear it my Prince, My troop went down to Brinebourne we had heard some thieves had stolen the Amphora of Anubis, we were ordered to take it back. We found ‘em it was four of them. We had them lined up, I stepped out for a sec. But those bastards always left me out of things, look at ‘em now.” he jeered, he looked at Cobalt staring down at him. He jumped, “and as I was coming back from takin’ a piss and I saw her, she had on a long bright dress. She had a glow to her. She looked young or at least the back of her did. That’s all I know I swear it by the gods my Prince.” he pleaded.

“Brinebourne, what’s near there?” He asked, he uncrossed his arms. Cobalt regretted not listening to his father’s talks of geography. It seemed irrelvant, until now.

“Um Elderburgh, ugh Fairglen, and I think... Newbury”

“Newbury” he repeated, I’ve never heard of such a town, what’s there?” he asked, Newbury sounded like a ridiculous name for a town, basic and unexciting, who would want to live there.

“Mainly peasants, and low-lifes alike, it’s just a dirt town really” he added.

“Just a dirt town, hmph” Cobalt stated, “and if you were a girl, traveling presumably alone where would you go?” the man shrugged at Cobalt’s question, fear in his eyes. “Of course you don’t know you’re just a soldier” Cobalt paused his expression changed as if an idea popped into his mind.

“You say you’ve never saw her face, but you heard her voice, so if you heard it again you would know it was her right?”

“Yes, my Prince but it was very faint I’m not sure if I could-”

“If you could that would please me, and perhaps change your current living quarters as well” he suggested. “Do you think you could do that for me?” The soldier’s eyes lit up, he nodded in agreement.

  “Good,” Cobalt smiled,
