Chapter 17: Levels

Leveling up Jason, had me realize I needed to level up as well. I was just about to pull up my stat page to do so when Ben spoke up.

“How many times did you level the human up? He looked to get much stronger.”

“It was just one level, but I used five of the seven attributes on strength. I figured it was best to make him strong.”

“Five! Seven! Are you saying humans get seven points to distribute?” Ben asked, eyes wide as saucers.

“Uh, yeah I guess so. Is that a lot or something?”

“Yes! Most only get one point to distribute for each level!”

  “Wait. What! Are you serious?”

“Yes, I’m serious! That is insane. I can’t believe he gets seven points!”

After Ben finally calmed down, he told me he received three. But that was only because of the Mother Tree doing something with his race. He got one for leveling and two for his race.

I completely avoided anything about how many attributes I received. It seemed seven was an absurd amount. Nearly half of my points came from being a contestant in some sort of game. Meaning everyone from earth also received an extra three. Giving them four total. Less, they received some for their race.

Getting three for being a squirrel seemed ridiculous sense most only received a single point. According to Jason’s stat page, humans got nothing extra.

Not wasting anymore time, I opened my stat page. We were waiting for Ben’s mana to recover. Which was the main reason we decided to deal with the skeleton here.

The wolves kept howling, which would be a problem when we left, but Ben said we would just wait till it was day and then leave.

Looking over my stats, I was happy to find I could now gain two more levels. Meaning fourteen more points to spend. Mana was one of my major concerns. But health would keep me alive. Focusing on spending the essence, a prompt appeared.

Would you like to spend 468 essence to reach level 4, Yess/No?

Selecting yes, there was a quick flash of white light and the stat page closed, then I received another prompt.

Congratulations: Through hard work, determination and just a dash of luck, you have reached level 4.

For reaching a new level you have been awarded with 1 attribute point. Due to being a unique race, you have been awarded 3 attribute points. And for being a contestant in the Primordial games, you have been awarded 3 attribute points.

  7 free attribute points available.

The notifications were the same as the ones I received last time. I was lucky those wolves were worth so much essence. Focusing on leveling up again, the familiar prompt appeared.

Would you like to spend 589 essence to reach level 5, Yess/No?

A flash of light, and another prompt.

If you spot this tale on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation.

Congratulations: Through hard work, determination and just a dash of luck, you have reached level 5.

For reaching a new level you have been awarded with 1 attribute point. Due to being a unique race, you have been awarded 3 attribute points. And for being a contestant in the Primordial games, you have been awarded 3 attribute points.

  7 free attribute points available.

I could see this getting annoying, eventually. Though it was likely levels would get harder and harder to come by. The fact that I gained seven times the normal attribute points as most beings in this world had me smile wildly.

I would be an over powered mage in no time. All I had to do was complete this quest for the tree, then get turned back in to a human then I could…

Well, I would figure that out after I turned human, and dealt with whatever this count down was. One thing at a time. First, I needed to spend my attribute points. Pulling up my page. I took a good look over my stats.

There was so much I didn’t know. My strength was pathetic, but I had Jason to make up for that. I needed some more points in health and wisdom. Though I had no idea what wisdom governed.

Closing the page, I looked over at Ben, who was curled up in the corner, sleeping. The rabbit seemed a bit scatterbrained. I would just ask the Mother Tree what wisdom and luck governed when we returned. Opening my stats, I looked over them for a bit longer before I made my decision. I placed the points one at a time.

Once I finished placing all my stats, I looked over my new stat page.

Three into vitality didn’t raise my health much, but health was important. I may need to focus on that stat more next time around. I also placed one into endurance and agility. Placing eight into intelligence boosted my mana up by a large amount. I gained a lot more mana per point than I did health. I just needed to find a way to use that mana to protect myself.

Lastly, I place one point into luck just because. I wasn’t sure what it governed, but it was always good to be lucky. I wasn’t sure if neglecting strength was a good idea. But I could always raise it up next time. Now I could keep my familiar here much longer. Especially when my racial boost is active.

Walking over, I looked up. There were two more path ways above. I could just make out something white and glowing. It looked kinda like a glowing doorway, but it was hard to tell at this distance.

I looked down towards Greydalf. He was just laying in the archway leading up. Surely he wouldn’t chance the axes. I wasn’t worried that he would get to us now as we were several levels up and each one had more traps that were all easily avoided for Ben and I but with his size he didn’t stand a chance.

I wondered what would happen to that wolf. He was basically trapped there less he went backwards, though he would get hit by arrows.

I dismissed the wellbeing of the wolf. I was starving and food was much more concerning. If I would have just not forgotten about the mushrooms, then I would have had something to eat on.

I was also a bit thirsty, though that wasn’t an issue yet, however food was something I did not enjoy going without.

I needed to get a backpack or something for my familiar so he could carry food. Curling up with my tail and laying down, I decided to take a quick nap.

I wanted to summon my familiar to watch over me while I slept. But, I just didn’t have that kinda mana yet. Thoughts of blueberries and shrooms played through my mind as I tried to fall asleep on an empty stomach. I forced my thoughts to casting ice magic and drinking with dwarves to distract myself from hunger. Eventually, sleep took my exhausted body.
