Chapter Twenty Two: Clash of Steel and Fury

The colossal cargo ship lay on its side, groaning, but from its overturned belly, a new threat emerged. Metallic hatches hissed open, and out poured a cascade of small, gleaming cubes. They hit the dusty ground, then with a synchronized whirring and clanking, transformed. From palm-sized blocks, they rapidly unfolded and expanded into full-sized, menacing Delta Robots, their numbers quickly swelling into the hundreds.

Lanni, Leader of the Zoner Knights, immediately took her stance, her Moon Sword already humming with energy. Beside her, Grinex, the massive bear, lumbered forward, his own battle axe held ready. The ground beneath them vibrated, not just from the new enemy, but from a growing sense of dread.

Just then, the overturned cargo ship, with a groan of stressed metal, began to move again. Retracting unseen legs, it started to right itself, then slowly, purposefully, rumbled forward, accelerating away from the brewing conflict. The prisoners within, including Grixie and Moco, were still trapped inside.

"Gravixor! Braxill!" Grinex roared, his voice cutting through the rising tension. "Go! Stop that cargo ship at all cost!"

Without a second's hesitation, Braxill and Gravixor broke from the forming battle lines, sprinting after the lumbering prison ship, their mission clear: save Grixie.

Lanni, meanwhile, stood resolute in the center of her four Zoner soldiers, her eyes fixed on the advancing robotic horde. Grinex stepped up beside her, his massive form dwarfing the human commander.

"Leader of the Zoner Knights, Lanni Linwig," Grinex rumbled, a challenging grin spreading across his muzzle.

Lanni, her gaze sharp, met his. "Grinex, the Rumbler. What do you say, Bear? Shall we dance?"

Unlawfully taken from Royal Road, this story should be reported if seen on Amazon.

Grinex let out a guttural chuckle. "I would be delighted, Leader!" He turned, his voice booming to the bear soldiers on his left and right. "Bears! Let's pay them back in full!"

With a unified roar, the bear warriors charged, their massive, makeshift axes held high. The clang of metal on metal filled the air as their axes crashed against the Delta robots' cybernetic arms, a brutal symphony of defiance.

The Delta Robots responded with cold, synchronized precision. They lifted their sleek rifles, and a hail of concentrated laser fire erupted. Bullets tore through the air, spitting dust from the ground. Lanni moved with impossible speed, her Moon Sword a silver blur.

She sliced several bullets in half mid-air, a testament to her superhuman reflexes. Some shots still whistled dangerously close, grazing her armor, but she weaved and ducked with fluid grace, darting beneath their focused fire. Each time she found an opening, her sword flashed, executing swift, final blows, slicing the Delta robots clean in half, their internal components sparking and dying. Her movements were precise, deadly, and almost elegant.

Grinex, however, fought with raw, unbridled power. He roared, rushing forward like a battering ram, his axe swinging in wide, devastating arcs.

Each strike crashed into the Delta robots with brute force, tearing them apart in explosions of circuits and shattered plating. It was a brutal, visceral fight, far removed from Lanni's clean sword strikes. Several bullets found their mark on Grinex's thick fur and hide, sparking against his skin, but he barely flinched, ignoring the pain.

The Delta Robots continued to fire, their focus on the massive bear. Suddenly, an ethereal shield of shimmering energy materialized directly in front of Grinex, deflecting a volley of incoming fire. He turned, surprised, to see Lanni standing beside him, her brow furrowed in concentration, her free hand extended.

"Thanks," Grinex grunted, a flicker of gratitude in his eyes. Without a moment's hesitation, he gripped the spectral shield. Empowered by the unexpected protection, he roared again, crashing through the remaining robots, hiding behind the ethereal barrier, taking no more damage. When he got close enough, he dropped the shield, his claws extending. With a savage roar, he latched onto a Delta Robot, crushing its metallic body with his immense strength, tearing it limb from limb. The alliance had truly begun.
