Her eyes sparkled with a wisdom that seemed to transcend the fiery realm in which we found ourselves. It almost reminded me of GamaGen.
"You're in my domain. My world." Her voice carried through the magma field surrounding us. "Welcome to Vulkanzhar."
"Who... who are you?" I stammered, still holding Liozel close to me, his small body trembling against mine.
The T-Rex let out a soft, rumbling chuckle. "I am Idalia, the Majesty of Vulkanzhar. You have entered my domain, and I must say, you're both quite a surprise."
"Pardon?" Liozel echoed. "What do you mean? We were just—"
A harrowing roar broke free from Idalia, her face creasing into heavy dejection as her gaze fell upon Liozel. "My (grandson)! My (grandson)! You live!" Those two words. Her dialect was thick, but if I heard correctly, she was referring to Liozel.
"D-Did you say... grandson?" I spluttered, glancing down at Liozel. His eyes were wide, filled with confusion, but also a flickering glimmer of recognition.
Liozel stared up at her. "You… you know me?"
"Of course, I do," Idalia said, her voice softening. "I have watched over you since you were just an egg. I knew you would find your way to me eventually." Her immense form shook slightly, as if she were holding back powerful emotions. "You've always been destined for greatness, little one."
"But… Dominus—he's after me!" Liozel's voice quivered, panic bleeding into his tone. "He wants to hurt me!"
The moment the name left his lips, Idalia's expression hardened. "That wretched beast has been a thorn in my side for far too long. He thinks he can claim what belongs to me." She leaned down, her gaze unwavering. "You were taken when you were just an embryo, swept away from our clan to protect you from the terrors that plagued our lands. But now you are here. Here, with me."
I tightened my grip around Liozel, glancing up at Idalia, who exuded both power and gentleness. "What do you mean 'swept away'? Who took him, and why?"
She hesitated, the flicker of sorrow crossing her eyes. "The world outside and within Vulkanzhar is fraught with dangers both known and unknown. Enemies of the Rift-Rex clan and the Zeldritch... So I sent those I could to protect him, to hide him in a sanctuary where the malice could not reach."
Liozel's eyes shimmered with unshed tears. "But I was so lonely! I thought... I thought I would never know my family!"
I felt my heart ache for him, for the lost time that he could never reclaim. But before I could respond, fractures erupted around us.
The ground began to tremble, and I heard a rumbling in the distance. Idalia's expression darkened as she turned toward the source of the disturbance. "It seems Dominus has found his way into my domain. You will need to leave swiftly, or he will bring devastation with him."
I stepped forward, trying to regain some semblance of authority in the situation. "I won't let him take him," I said, meeting Idalia's gaze. "Whatever it takes, I will protect him."
Idalia regarded me. "Brave words, child. But bravery alone will not suffice in this realm. Dominus is powerful, and his reach extends far beyond what you see. He will stop at nothing to reclaim his prize."
"Then we need to get stronger," I replied without hesitation.
"Perhaps. If I am correct, you carry the scent of the Merecritt…" Idalia resumed, and I became curious as she spoke. "…That path is fraught with its own dangers, but it holds a potential that could tip the scales in your favor."
"What do you mean?" I asked, glancing down at Liozel, whose confusion mirrored my own.
"The Zeldritch ascension. If you aim to compete with Dominus, you must ascend into a rank equivalent to his. You will need to undergo trials to prove yourself worthy of its gifts."
My heart raced at the prospect. If this was a chance to gain the strength we needed to stand against Dominus and Jalkra, then I was all in. "What kind of trials?"
"My old friend. Dangerous as he is," she hesitated. "Seek out the MereChieftain."
The story has been illicitly taken; should you find it on Amazon, report the infringement.
The ground shook again, and I could hear Dominus's voice booming through the area. "Idalia! I know you're hiding them! Show yourself, or I will raze this entire realm to the ground!"
Panic surged through me. "We don't have much time!"
Idalia nodded, her eyes focusing intently on me. "You must go now. The MereChieftain will recognize your essence and guide you. You must convince him to grant you access to the trials. But beware: the challenges you face will test not only your strength but your heart as well."
"I'm ready," I declared, my voice firm despite the rising anxiety within me. Liozel squeezed my arms, looking up at me with determination mingled with fear.
"Go, then," Idalia instructed, her massive head lowering close to us, her golden mane brushing against my skin. "But remember: trust in each other and the bond you share. That will be your greatest weapon."
Just as I pressed my hand to her snout, a massive shadow loomed over us. Dominus had just arrived behind what seemed like a heat haze. His eyes were scanning our surroundings, searching for any signs of his quarry. He sniffed several times.
"There you are!" he roared, and the ground rattled with his fury. "You think you can hide from me in this wretched land? I will take what is mine, and nothing will stop me!"
"Go!" Idalia's maw opened as the world-shattering portal she had created swallowed us whole. As the world around us twisted and warped, I felt the heat of Dominus's fury receding, but the urgency of our situation constricted my heart. The sensation of being pulled through time and space disoriented me, and I clutched Liozel tightly as the landscape shimmered and shifted.
It all ended with a sudden jolt; we landed on solid ground. We were no longer surrounded by the scorching heat of Vulkanzhar. Instead, we stood at the edge of a dense forest, the air fragrant with the scent of blooming flowers and fresh earth. Sunlight filtered through the leaves overhead, casting dappled shadows on the forest floor.
Liozel looked around, blinking in confusion. "Where are we now?"
"I don't know," I admitted, taking a moment to catch my breath before scanning our surroundings. Despite the beauty of this new place, an uneasy feeling gnawed at me, the echo of Dominus's roar still lingering in my ears. We needed to find the MereChieftain quickly.
"KiAera? Or is that Mina I smell?" The sound of rustling sound drew my attention. I turned to see a small, fluffy creature with pink fur stepping cautiously out from the trees.
"Pink—Skadi!" I cried out.
Skadi froze on the spot, her heterochromic eyes wide. Immediately, she arched her back, her fur puffing out, ears flattened, and squirrel-like tail swishing. "What in the marvels?! Who the heck are you?!"
"Skadi, it's me!" I called out, hastily taking a step forward. "Ki… KiAera! We were just in Vulkanzhar, and—"
"Vulkanzhar?!" Skadi interrupted, her ears perking up in surprise. She darted closer, eyeing Liozel. "Seriously?! You're Ki? And who's this little guy? You're not in trouble, are you?"
"No trouble, Skadi," Liozel said quietly, clutching my chest. "Just trying to get away from the scary dinosaur."
"Wait." Skadicritt sniffed. "Skaditty! That scent! Oh my goodness, you! You're baby Lio!"
Skadi's eyes widened further as she took a few steps closer, her posture shifting from defensive to curious. "It really is you! I can't believe it! Wait until the others hear!"
She didn't even allow us another word as she turned and bounded away, so we simply followed her.
"Skadi, do you know where the MereChieftain is?" I called out as we weaved through the underbrush.
"Yes! He's not far from here. He tends to the Heartwood Grove—it's a sacred place filled with Merecritts!" She glimpsed over her shoulder. "Why?"
"I need to meet him." I said.
Skadicritt skidded to a halt as we entered the first gate of the Crystal Shelter's glades, and she held her gaze up at me. She fidgeted where she stood. "Um, Skaditty's not sure about that. Gramps might not be too keen on outsiders right now, and he doesn't trust easily."
I felt a pang of disappointment but nodded, understanding her. But, this was about more than just us now—Liozel's very existence was on the line. "We must take the chance, Skadi. We need the MereChieftain's help to prepare for what's to come."
She looked torn, her eyes darting between me and Liozel. Finally, she sighed, her resolve hardening. "Okay, okay! But you have to follow my lead. If we get to the Heartwood Grove, just listen to what I say. Promise?"
"Promise," I said firmly, rubbing Liozel's back reassuringly.
Skadi's eyes widened as she pointed her paw. "Ki! Look! You have a big ouchie on your tummy! Does it hurt a whole bunch?"
I looked down and frowned at the gaping wound. In fact, I barely felt anything. I attributed it to Mina's surprising pain tolerance. "It does feel a little ouchie, Skadi. But it's not too bad, I promise! It's just needs some patching." I smiled wide, trying to make it sound less scary—for her, for Liozel.
In response, Skadi gave me a wary glance. "Skaditty thinks you're hiding something, but I suppose I can let it slide for now." She shrugged, her fur flaring out in a burst of energy as she turned back toward the Crystal Shelter. "Come on! Follow me!"
"Oh by the way!" I was about to say. I needed to tell her we needed to return to DreaGoth for—
"Mellow and Willow are back!" Skadi continued, catching me off guard with the surprising news. "So is the Dorvus and everyone else! Plus, there are some new faces! They just suddenly appeared when the sky split, but they looked pretty banged up when they arrived… like Nex. He's in really bad shape and is currently receiving treatment."
My mind raced back to the events that had transpired—Nex confronting his mother, only to have his wing torn to shreds in the aftermath. I could only imagine how deeply his heart, and especially his pride, must have been wounded. Still, it brought me some comfort knowing he was receiving the care he needed.
Once we entered the tunnel that led into the shelter, I understood what she meant by "new faces." Loa, the tengu woman we had allied with back at Tilz's fortress, was languidly pacing around the glade, her tired eyes examining the area as was her usual way. However, the worst sight was when I spotted the large, dragonic kobold warrior himself—Tilz. He still looked battered and haggard from our previous encounter with Berylgem's forces. A few of his kolkobalt soldiers had accompanied him as well. But seriously, how? why were they here?
The Mina within me urged me to march toward him, and I only came to a halt when I saw Tailza hurrying toward her father, equipment held in her arms to treat him. My heart warmed as I witnessed the kobold girl pressing a mildly damp towel against his wounds, the two sharing a tearful smile.
