The clouds parted like curtains, revealing a tempestuous sky as thunder rolled ominously in their wake. From the darkness emerged the shape of a man—no, a monster—his silhouette impeccable: horned and broad-shouldered, wreathed in a crimson aura that shimmered like blood in the half-light. Jalkra. His arrival was a cataclysm all its own.
And the air seemed to hold its breath as my heart pounded in rhythm with the impending storm that followed him.
"Our Lord has arrived..." The soft, reverent whisper of Gamuikaze cut through the tension, barely audible over the distant rumble of thunder.
Then, the world shook. A shockwave rippled through the air as Jalkra's massive form crashed to the ground before me. The impact was devastating, sending nearby goblinoids and skelhounds sprawling, their bones snapping like brittle twigs under the force.
All I could do was watch as dust swirled around the Oni, enveloping him in a thick, choking haze. His horns sparked with red lightning, a fierce energy that seemed to pulse with the storm within him. Beneath my feet, the ground shuddered, trembling under the weight of his presence.
"Jalkra…" Grush began, his voice strained. "You were supposed to be at the borders."
Jalkra didn't respond. His eyes glowed a deep, molten gold as he looked at the monstrous skeleton. And then at me—recognition flickered in his gaze.
I braced myself, flame flickering in my claws.
I stepped back, only to feel something solid behind me. Startled, I glanced up, half-convinced I'd see Nex's familiar face. Instead, I found a stranger—a woman with features that were hauntingly similar to his. I blinked, trying to wrap my head around the uncanny resemblance. Just as I was about to gather my thoughts, that bat-like creature nudged me gently forward and said in my ear, "Easy now. Darling's currently busy."

My gaze returned to Jalkra. His furred cloak billowed behind him—black as a stormcloud, as his gaze settled on Grush, and a slow smile spread across his face.
"You dared to come here," Jalkra said. "To my domain. To my outpost."
Grush snarled, raising his bone blade in challenge. "This land will be dust under my heel, demon. This basin will be his—"
Before he could finish, Jalkra was already moving, launching into the air. His fist shot forward in a blur of motion, smashing into Grush's skull-like face with enough force to crater the ground beneath them. The blow split the air with a thunderous crack—Grush's enormous skeletal frame shuddered, then skidded back, his feet gouging deep furrows in the stone.
For a moment, the world was silent. Then, Jalkra's voice broke the stillness as he landed. "You're no lord. You're carrion. And I will scatter your bones to the wind."
Grush roared and lunged, swinging his blade in a wide arc. But Jalkra didn't dodge; he simply caught the blade in his hand, fingers closing around it like a vice. Sparks and black mist hissed from the contact, the bone blade shivering.
And then, with a single flex of his arm, Jalkra snapped the blade in half.
Grush staggered, disbelief in his hollow eyes. Jalkra leapt, his other hand came up, seizing the Skeldokuro's skull in a grip so powerful the bone cracked audibly. In one smooth motion, he lifted Grush off the ground like a child's toy.
"Enough," Jalkra said, voice calm, almost bored. Then he slammed Grush's head into the ground so hard the impact sent shockwaves across the basin. A ring of displaced earth rolled outward from the blow, dust and rock billowing into the air. Grush's skeletal frame twitched once, then fell still.
A hush fell across the battlefield. The goblinoid riders hesitated, the skelhounds whimpering as the aura of death and dominance radiated from the Oni. Even the siege walkers in the distance seemed to slow, as though some primal instinct warned them away.
Jalkra rose, and he looked at me then, his eyes sharp and measuring. "Greetings," he said, almost gently. "You've held well."
"I didn't expect you to be here," I admitted as I glanced back at the Nexburst woman behind me.
He shrugged, then began to approach. "Of course. But I know you. Mina told me much. You stand as an ember of resistance. And as a prize for me to claim."
The weight of his stare was suffocating, but I lifted my chin, frostfire coiling around my claws. "I won't be claimed."
A slow smile curled across his lips. "We'll see."
Silence reigned for a heartbeat.
Jalkra eyes scanned the battlefield. They passed over me again—curious, assessing, but not yet hostile. He walked past me—past the bat monster woman—ignoring me entirely.
"You."
His gaze settled on Berylgem—who had Tilz staggered, battered, and kneeling. Berylgem froze, eyes wide in horror, mouth moving as if to speak.
"Berylgem," Jalkra said softly, almost conversational. "I saw you hide in the dust. You wear stealth as a second skin, don't you?" His voice was calm, but there was a quiet threat in it, the kind that needed no raising.
Berylgem swallowed, trying to force words past a throat gone dry. "Jalkra… I… I didn't know you'd come. I was only—"
"Only trying to claim what was never yours." Jalkra took another step closer. "You tried to strike when I was away on a trip. A coward's move, Berylgem. Do you really think camouflage will save you now?"
"I… I beg you—"
"You think me a fool, gemling?" Jalkra's voice dropped lower still. "I see the truth beneath your glimmer. I see every crack in your mask."
Berylgem dropped to his knees, gem-sword clattering to the ground. "Mercy, Jalkra. We are on the same side—!"
Jalkra's lips twitched into something that might've been amusement, or disdain. "Mercy?" He took another step forward, the ground cracking underfoot. "You waste my time, Berylgem. You waste my patience. You waste your own soldiers—using them like fodder, not warriors. And you have the gall to plead?"
If you spot this narrative on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation.
Berlygem took a step back, his faceted face glistening with sweat. "I… I thought you were gone! I only came to secure this basin—"
Jalkra walked and advanced on the gem gremlin. "Three hundred kobolds. One hundred praiyeblasis. Four hundred souls I entrusted to this place. And you… you would cut them down in the night and call it conquest."
"No, I swear—" Berylgem shook his head and snapped. "Eh. Screw this!" He shoved several dark crystals into his mouth and sneered as his body underwent a convulsive transformation, power rising drastically.

"Die, Jalkra!" His arm transformed into a gem-blade as he swung.
Jalkra's hand shot out faster than thought, seizing Berlygem by the throat. The gem creature gave a wet gurgle, eyes bulging as Jalkra lifted him clean off the ground, his claws digging into the jagged fur. The gem-sword clattered to the rocks below.
"You're not a conqueror," Jalkra said. "You're a parasite."
Berlygem's feet scrabbled against the air, claws scraping, but Jalkra's grip didn't waver. "I… please… we can… talk—"
Jalkra's other hand rose, two fingers extending. A flare of pale light gathered at his fingertips—an energy so cold and so precise it cut the air itself. "There is no talk, Berlygem," he said. "Only judgment."
A flash of light, then silence. The gem gremlin's body cracked in a dozen places, shattering like glass under a hammer. Shards of crystal scattered across the rocks, the echo of his final gasp swallowed by the howling wind.
Jalkra let the pieces fall, his gaze turning to Tilz—who stepped back, sword ready, though his eyes showed respect.
"You did well," Jalkra said, his voice steady now. "Hold this line. I will deal with what remains."
Then he turned back to me, the wind shifting around his shoulders. His molten gaze met mine. "And you," he said, his tone low and thoughtful. "I've heard of you, KiAera of the Spectral Flame. You've already made a name for yourself in blood and frost."
I forced my breath steady, the cold fire in my claws still burning. "I will not kneel to you, Jalkra."
His lips curved faintly, almost amused. "I don't want your bow. I want your strength." He turned away, stepping over the shattered remains of Berlygem like they were nothing. "Now… we can settle this matter civilly or amid bloodshed. Choice is an illusion in battle, but I offer you the one here."
I clenched my jaws, fighting down the instinct to recoil from the boldness of his aura. "Civilly? You've just crushed a traitor into dust in front of me. What is civil about that?"
Tilz glanced over at me then at Jalkra, but kept his gaze low. "KiAera, please… Lord Jalkra's only…"
Jalkra held his hand up, silencing Tilz. "You misunderstand, KiAera. This is not cruelty—it is law. Berylgem needed to be removed before his poison could spread further into this realm. I merely ensured that true strength is understood."
"And you think your way is right?"
"I do not think it. I know it."
This guy. The flames in my claws flickered uneasily; my instincts screamed to flee, my mind told me to stand my ground.
"Mom?" My ears twitched at the sound of Rox's voice. I turned, noticing that her gaze was fixated on Nyx—longing, lingering, and pained.
Nyx didn't even look at her as she spoke. "Oh dear, I believe I've forgotten some rubbish. I have no business with this thing." A haughty look was in her eyes. "Jalkra, what is the meaning of this? Why are we wasting our time with this... creature?"
My heart simmered as I saw Rox's eyes widen, tears beginning to well up in them.
I glared at Nyx. "You... is that how you treat your child?"
Nyx scoffed. "Her? That is nothing but waste. I have no children." She vanished where she stood and loomed before Rox with an empty gaze. Her claws were unsheathed. "Let's end this now. Shall we?"
Jalkra shook his head. "Leave her, Nyx. The Nexperbax is not your toy."
Rox took a step back, her face pale. "N-no. Don't. Please, mom!"
"Nyx, stop!" Tilz roared.
Nyx lunged at Rox.
But I stepped in front of her, catching the blow on my forearm, the pain sharp enough to draw a hiss from my throat. A crackling aura of frostfire flared around my body, my eyes locking with hers.
Nyx drew back, her expression tightening into one of surprise. Then she sneered. "Out of my way, you wretched—"
I didn't give her the chance to finish. I slashed up with my other hand, leaving a shallow gash across her torso. Her eyes widened in shock, then she stumbled back, clutching her chest.
"You dare—!" she snarled, black ichor dripping between her fingers. She lunged, claws extended, but another figure collided with her, only to be pinned to the ground beneath her. I recognized the other bat monster as Nex, who hissed in his mother's face, "How dare you?! How dare you, you traitorous wretch! You abandoned us, left us to starve and suffer—and—"
"And what?" Nyx spat, pressing her claws into her son's shoulders. "You're worthless. A waste. You always have been. That's why I left. You don't deserve anything more than this."
Nex roared in fury, his form shifting into a blur of blue light. Nyx's head jerked back as the two went flying through the air in a tangled mass of fur and wings. I took a step toward them, but was stopped by a firm hand on my shoulder. I glanced up to see Mina standing above me, her expression grim.
"Don't interfere," she said. "This is their fight."
Nex's voice rang out clear through the battlefield. "You want to kill me? Then do it!" He twisted in Nyx's grip, his claws striking her afterimages. "Do it! Finish me off!"
Nyx laughed, an ugly sound that echoed across the basin. "Oh, I will. I'll take pleasure in it." Her aura surged, a wave of pure malice crashing down on the two of them. "I'll show you how useless you are. How weak you are. You can't even save your own sister. You can't even protect your friends. You're pathetic."
"I will not die here!" Nex screamed, his aura blazing. "Not before you!"
The air between the two of them warped, a ripple of power that sent shockwaves rippling outward, sending everyone else stumbling. Tilz was blown away, falling to the ground and rolling over several times before coming to a halt. Mina let go of my shoulder and fell back as well, her face set in a grimace.
A seismic thud followed. There, I saw him—Nex lay backward on the ground, one of his wings now torn to shreds. His gaze was empty, his breathing ragged, but his voice remained steady as he stared up at his mother. "You may be stronger than I am, but I won't let you win this fight."
Nyx sneered down at him. "You think you have a chance?" She raised her claws again, then paused, her gaze flicking over to where Jalkra stood nearby.
"That's enough," he said, his voice carrying clearly across the battlefield. "I won't have you killing my troops."
Nyx snarled, but lowered her wings. She glanced over at me, her eyes lidding. "And what of her? What do you plan to do with her?"
Jalkra rolled his shoulders. "She has potential. And I'll see to it that she puts it to good use." He turned his attention to me, his eyes burning with intensity. "So, KiAera of the Chimera Crew... what say you? Will you join us, or will you perish here?"
My jaw tightened. My mind raced, trying to find a way out of this mess—but all paths seemed to lead back to this decision.
"You have power, KiAera," he continued. "It simmers beneath the surface, a volcano ready to erupt. Align with me, and you can channel that energy toward a greater purpose. Together, we could reshape this land, impose order on the chaos."
"Order?" I scoffed. "Is that what you call your reign of terror? The bodies left in your wake tell a different story."
His expression hardened, and he stepped closer. "Do you think this war will elevate you to some throne? A queen, perhaps?" Each footfall cracked the stone. "You are merely a spark—beautiful and bright, but sparks are destined to flicker and fade."
I held his gaze, refusing to flinch. "I fight for those who deserve a chance. Not for power."
His laughter echoed through the field. "Justice? A fleeting dream in this world. And yet, here you stand, clinging to your illusions. Very well. I won't compel you to bow before me. Instead, I offer you a challenge—a test of might."
Mina placed herself partially in front of me. "She's not alone, Jalkra."
"No," Jalkra agreed. "She's surrounded. And I am here."
Mina took another step toward Jalkra. "Let us go."
Jalkra tilted his head slightly. "I don't recall you being part of the deal, Minokaurbo."
Mina looked down at her feet, then back at him. "Please," she whispered.
Jalkra sighed. "You always were too soft." He took another step toward us, his eyes glowing crimson. "But if you wish to join her, so be it. It's time to make your choice."
My heart thundered in my chest, my body trembling. This was it. The moment that would decide my fate. I looked up at Mina, who met my gaze evenly, then turned to Rox, Viz, and Nex, who were staring at me with wide, pleading eyes.
"KiAera… damn it!" Mina hissed. Her gaze whipped toward me with fury. "Fuse with me. That's our only option against that demon."
Rox, Viz, and Nex watched us from afar, waiting anxiously for my response.
My eyes lidded. "Are you sure?"
Mina gave a sharp nod. "Yes. If we fuse together, we might stand a chance. We have no other choice."
I took a deep breath, steeling myself for what was to come. Then, I nodded. "Alright. Let's do this."
"I don't want to die here," Mina said. "Not like this. Not at his hands."
I looked down at the ground. "Neither do I." I lifted my gaze to hers, and our eyes met. "Then let's show him what we're made of."
Mina's lips twitched into a slight smile. "Sounds good to me." She reached out and touched my forehead, her palm warm against my skin.
We looked at each other for a moment, then I closed my eyes, feeling a surge of energy flowing through me.
The world around us blurred, colors swirling in my vision.
