It was halfway through her shift the next night when Sheriff David Grove’s pushed through the doors she’d half expected the police but she wanted to groan when he was the one to show up.
Sheriff David Grove and her had a strange but functional relationship. He’d been horrified to find her existence as a seemingly strange seventeen-year-old girl living with his fifty something year old screw up brother. He’d judge Grove and her and Misery had reacted to conflict like she always did with the ability to exasperate and horrify. She hated him for hating Grove and judging her and he thought of her as a mess he had to clean up.
It was a tradition in the Grove family of giving a compass to their boys to always find the way back to the Grove’s path. A tradition that the golden child hadn’t even thought of passing down to his daughters but mattered so much to Grove that he’d given it to Misery.
After that Sheriff David Grove or Vid as she’d called him to annoy him but he’d accepted with affection decided to look deeper and decided to stand by her. Though they weren’t perfect he insisted on telling his wife and daughters that she was Grove’s daughter rather than explain her true history and she still insisted on choosing paths that he didn’t agree with.

Evident by the disapproving look he sent her.
“Why Lately are you always some how tied to the phone calls I’m getting?” Vid asked sounding exasperated.
“Because I’m not willing to change how I look to appease people who think I look like a vampire. I have a bad attitude, don’t care much to hide that and I don’t have a desire to pretend to idolize or despise vampires or shifters.” Misery offered with a raise of a brow asking him if he wanted more reasons.
“Ree.” He hissed. Misery chuckled.
“This though I’m pretty sure it must be about those fuckers who came through drunk off their ass. Ready to take on anything they perceived as a vampire. They concerned me.” Misery admitted tearing out the license plate handing it to him. “Wrote down their license plate just in case. They were so dumb they didn’t notice the guy behind them was a vampire.” Misery added.
Vid stiffened.
“There was a vampire?” He asked. Misery nodded.
“Yeah I rang him up bitched to him for a bit and gave him my number.” Misery listed to explain the passing of paper and partially to get that exasperated sputter from Vid.
“You gave a vampire your number?” He gaped. Misery shrugged.
“He was hot.” She offered. Vid sucked in a breath but held his tongue and Misery moved on.
“Let me call Darren and I’ll give you the camera footage.” Misery offered.
Having him set up with everything and answering his questions once again Misery had herself alone in the Mini mart. Well as alone as one could be with customers coming in and out.
