Chapter 10 The Mysterious Dagger

Angel’s Daughter ran into the forest. She knew no one was following her and she had nothing to fear, but she had to run—she had to escape the memories she could not face, memories that would haunt her forever.

As she fled, she tripped and fell, cutting her face on something sharp. She let out a shout of pain and lifted a hand to her face. When she brought her hand down, it was wet with blood. Looking around for the object that had cut her, she found a dagger lying on the ground, dripping with her blood and stained with the blood of many others. She picked up the dagger, and holding it made her feel powerful, as if no one could defeat her. She also found a leather sheath that fit the dagger perfectly.

Suddenly, she heard a rustling behind her and, acting on pure instinct, she turned around and threw the dagger. It flew through the air and struck an eagle overhead. The eagle tried to keep flying but crashed to the ground with a thud. She walked over to the now dead bird to retrieve her dagger but found the eagle—with no dagger in sight. Confused, she turned away and started walking.

Soon, she came across a small lake. Leaning over to take a drink, she caught a glimpse of something in her reflection that startled her. It wasn’t the dried blood on the gash across her face or the scars on her skin, but rather the dagger, sheathed at her hip. She reached for it and drew it from the leather sheath.

“Did I pick it up and simply forget?” she wondered aloud, even though she knew no one could hear her. “No, I definitely didn’t pick it up. What if…” Without finishing the thought, she threw the dagger as far as she could. It splashed into the lake. When she looked down at the sheath, she saw that the dagger had returned once again to her side.

She smiled—this dagger would be an instrument of her revenge. The Thief Clan would pay for robbing her of her soulmate, for taking away the only one she had truly loved, and for destroying her one chance at happiness. They would pay dearly, with their lives. Only when everyone who knew she was still alive, everyone who knew she had survived the battle, was gone, would she finally be able to live in peace, free from those who wished her harm.
