Chapter 15: The Fear of Death.
~~~ [START]
In the chambers of a large, castle-like building. Two figures sat in stillness. With one of them, slinging his arm around the other’s shoulders.
“Does it sadden you?” Aro, the one with an arm around the other, spoke.
“Why would it?” The woman, Sulpicia, replied. Her head lifted as she blessed him with a kiss on the cheek. “Is this not for my protection?”
And a soft smile embraced Aro’s lips. “It is.”
Then he pulled her closer, cold skin meeting skin. Crystal meeting crystal; it was perfect for him.
“Does he frighten you?” She asked, and a frown embraced him.
“Who?” His voice hinted at being taken aback. “The infant, how absurd—”
“Does he?” The question braced his defense.
“No,” he replied, slumping deeper into the bedsheets beneath him.
They were in a cave. But instead of it being filled with ruins or dried bones, it was the cleanest dungeon that would ever exist. With smooth black floors, all shiny and glossed, and bright chandeliers hanging from the ceiling above them.
“He does not scare me.” Aro’s voice continued, unbothered. “But the father did.”
Sulpicia’s head lifted to him. Observing as he continued.
“He frightened us. For hundreds of years. Five hundred years of continuous slaughter… it was, it—”
“Is that why you came?” She interrupted again.
Aro’s thoughts shifted back to reality. “Huh?”
She stared at him for the pause of a moment.
“You never come here.” She said, a smile creeping up her lips. “Ever since Athenodora and I were sent here, you only show your face once every ten turns of the sun. You hide from me.”
If you stumble upon this tale on Amazon, it's taken without the author's consent. Report it.
Aro just shifted his hand above her belt, lifted it, then started massaging her breasts.
“So…” Her words continued, a moan seconds away from escaping the lips, “does he frighten you—”
“Dead is dead.” Aro cut.
As she slowly turned to him, “Is he really dead?”
The question had the simplest of answers; it was the easiest to assure. But even after the many years following his fall, the fear of lying in his name sent shivers down his crystallized spine.
Because they all knew that the one who spoke vainly of Death would summon it, or in this sense, summon him.
{ELSEWHERE}
“Gina has practice,” Honey said, throwing the car keys to Troy, who, with little effort, caught them.
Troy smiled, with the endless stream of students walking through the hallway continually bumping him in opposition. “But I thought you said cheerleading was for ‘bitches’?”
“That’s Gina… not me, and we aren’t cheerleaders. We’re just doing it for extra credit.”
Troy shook his head with a chuckle, watching as her figure disappeared within the many.
So, he turned and started walking.
And when he got out, his feet nearly halted with his hands clenching below.
He thought they were with the enemy, but something about them seemed strange to him. How their eyes, instead of red, had taken a different form. Or how they walked differently, and in a way had a certain edge to jump at every human as though they were thirsted of blood.
Then unexpectedly, all thought paused when a red van drifted toward Bella, who was standing near her truck, too distracted by the music on her earphones and the book she was returning to her bag.
Everyone didn’t notice it; it was already too late.
And Troy just shook his head, but then his eyes widened when Edward suddenly dashed toward the figure.
Pushed her out of the way, then lifted his arm, blocking the truck from continuing its drift.
The whole parking lot turned, with some running toward them, while Tylar dismounted from the truck’s driver’s seat, sweating and cursing under his breath, begging for forgiveness.
His hands shivered, too ignorant to notice that he was bleeding from the forehead.
Troy turned his head to the rest of the vampires, and much like he expected, they were all staring daggers at Edward, their frowns lurking on their faces.
So, they got in their cars, waited for Edward, who rushed and climbed in, then drove off.
“Call the ambulance!” Someone shouted from the crowd.
“No, I’m fine,” Bella said, but the surroundings ignored her words, because in less than an hour, the ambulance arrived and took her to the hospital.
All the meantime, Troy just sat in Gina’s driver’s seat, staring at the event, head shaking behind it.
Then, just like all of them, he left.
He had lost track of time; he was late.
{ELSEWHERE}{MINUETS LATER}
DING!
“You’re late!” Mrs Cole suddenly called from the kitchen.
Troy’s eyes widened, his steps stumbling under his feet. “You’re here? wait… aren’t you supposed to be at a family—?”
“I lied.” She walked out, holding two plates of pasta, and handed them to some customers who were laughing at his bewilderment.
“Stop staring and get to work.” She said, grabbing an apron from one of the counters and throwing it to him.
Troy caught it.
“And don’t give that friend of yours the keys to my diner again… you’re demoted.”
