Chapter 3: Boss_Prototype_03

  Ash hit the ground hard enough that the sound clipped.

  The engine couldn’t decide whether to play a heavy thud or a light stumble, so the audio glitched halfway between the two before smoothing into silence.

  His HP bar snapped down to a sliver, blinking red.

  FALL DAMAGE: -87% HP

  CONCUSSION DEBUFF APPLIED — Vision Distortion

  COLLISION STATE ERROR: UNDEFINED BEHAVIOR

  Ash rolled onto his back and groaned.

  The world around him swam, polygons bending at the edges like a fisheye lens. A pixelated haze flickered over his vision until the concussion debuff settled, stabilizing the environment just enough that he could make sense of where he’d landed.

  He was in a massive chamber.

  Bigger than any dungeon room he’d ever seen.

  Bigger than most raid arenas.

  And deeply wrong.

  Half of the room was fully textured: obsidian pillars, carved stone murals, fragments of architecture that looked handcrafted by the devs during an early world-building phase. But other sections were pure wireframe were skeletal outlines of intended structures that never received actual models. Some walls existed only as grid ghosts. A staircase spiraled into nothing, vanishing into a fog of missing assets. A chunk of the floor flickered between cobblestone and flat grey dev texture depending on where he stood.

  This was content that never made it into the game.

  Cut content.

  The bottom of the well wasn’t a well at all. It was a scrapped boss arena.

  Ash pushed himself to a sitting position, wincing. His fall had left his armor cracked in places where the physics engine hadn’t known how to properly resolve collision. He tapped a potion.

  POTION ERROR — UNEXPECTED STATE. PLEASE RETRY.

  The potion icon disappeared from his inventory.

  "Cool,” Ash said.

  His vision cleared enough to see the centerpiece of the room.

  A massive shape lay coiled in the center, draped across a circular platform like a forgotten monument. Jagged wings. A long tail ending in a barbed, unfinished mesh. Horns spiraling backward in uneven, untextured ridges. Its scales were a patchwork of beautiful, iridescent texture maps and checkerboard corruption.

  A dragon.

  Or the idea of one.

  Ash’s heart thudded once.

  This thing might have been intended as a raid-tier boss. It radiated a kind of silent authority, even dormant. But up close, it was clearly unfinished. One wing was missing polygons. The tail jittered occasionally, clipping a few frames ahead before snapping back. The chest cavity rose and fell in a slow breathing animation that stuttered every so often.

  And above its head, flickering, unstable:

  The nameplate jittered violently.

  [BOSS_ENCOUNTER_UNFINISHED]

  [???]

  Then back to the first.

  Ash stared, barely breathing.

  “So you were supposed to be something grand,” he said.

  The dragon’s eye snapped open.

  Stolen story; please report.

  Ash flinched backward, scrambling to his feet.

  The eye was massive, bigger than his entire torso, and yet the iris flickered through several textures, unable to settle on one: gold, silver, flat red placeholder, transparent. Each state lasted only a frame or two.

  A low rumble rolled through the chamber.

  The dragon inhaled.

  Then the creature spoke.

  Its voice shook the room except the audio didn’t quite load correctly. The bass was muffled, the treble too sharp, lines crackling with digital noise.

  “Play—”

  Static.

  “Player.”

  Glitch.

  “A—sh.”

  Ash froze.

  “That’s, that’s my name.”

  The dragon’s head jerked upward in a jerky, unfinished animation loop, as if trying to run a “rise” script that only half-existed. The massive creature struggled, wings clipping into pillars, tail cutting through the floor. Eventually it stabilized into something resembling an upright posture.

  “You—” The voice loaded three different dialogue files at once. “—are the first to descend here.”

  Ash swallowed. “I fell.”

  “Yes. No. Both.”

  The dragon’s head twitched. The nameplate flickered.

  [Boss_Prototype_03 wants to initialize Encounter Intro Sequence.]

  [Encounter Intro Sequence missing. Attempting fallback.]

  The dragon opened its maw, but instead of a roar, a garbled audio file played:

  “FEAR ME, I AM ERROR: NOT FOUND.”

  Ash blinked.

  The dragon froze.

  Then, incredibly, it sighed a long, glitch-tinged exhale.

  “They scrapped my lines,” the creature said. “All of them.”

  Ash couldn’t help it: a startled laugh escaped him.

  The dragon turned its massive head toward him with a weary dignity only something truly ancient and disappointed could muster.

  “I was to be a world-ender.”

  Static crackled across its scales.

  “A myth. A trial spoken of in hushed tones.”

  The dragon’s tail phased halfway into the floor. “And then a developer looked at the schedule and said, ‘Cut it.’”

  Ash took a step closer. “So you’re what? A deleted boss?”

  The dragon’s laugh was a glitchy, corrupted reverb.

  “Not deleted. Forgotten.” Its voice softened, dropping into a lower file. “Trapped here in half-rendered sleep. Waiting.”

  “For what?” Ash said.

  The dragon’s eye narrowed.

  “For someone who could see me.”

  The words struck deeper than Ash expected.

  He remembered the child NPC’s whisper: You shouldn’t be here.

  The old sage’s warning: Beware the things that were never finished.

  He met the dragon’s shifting gaze. “You recognize me because I took the descent.”

  “Yes.”

  A glitch.

  “No.”

  A longer pause.

  "Because you are the only player who has ever triggered the fall state for this chamber.”

  Ash blinked. “So no one else has ever—”

  “No one.” The dragon’s head lowered until the massive snout was level with Ash’s chest. “And I do not intend to lose my only visitor to deletion.”

  Ash wasn’t sure how he felt about being claimed like that.

  The dragon continued, voice softer now, almost reverent.

  “You lost something to get here. Strength. Memory. Speed.”

  Its eye flickered gold, then red.

  “In return, the Hollow offers you a guide.”

  “Guide?”

  The dragon’s wings twitched. “I am bound to this place. My rigging is incomplete. I cannot navigate the upper geometry. But-”

  The dragon shuddered and suddenly its entire model shrank violently, compressing into a polygon shard the size of a basketball. Then the shard expanded, unfolding into a tiny, half-rendered dragon the size of a large bird.

  Ash stumbled backward in shock.

  The mini-dragon flapped once, crashing sideways into the floor with a metallic clank. It picked itself up, looking offended.

  “My scaling function is—”

  A spark of static.

  “—temperamental.”

  Ash stared. “What the hell was that?”

  “A compromise,” the dragon said through a slightly tinny version of its voice. “This form fits the player rig. I can accompany you up the well shafts and through narrow map seams.”

  “You’re coming with me?”

  The dragon looked embarrassed which was strange, because its facial rig wasn’t built for subtle expressions. Yet somehow the feeling came through.

  “If you will allow it,” it said. “I have waited an eternity for purpose. If you continue the descent alone, you will probably die. But with my knowledge and your ability to improvise, we may yet see the end of this path.”

  Ash hesitated.

  Then raid chat pinged.

  [RAID] Ravenous: ASH ARE YOU DEAD

  [RAID] HealerDad: Bro blink twice if you’re alive

  [RAID] Dove: I think he actually fell into a glitchhole this time lol

  [RAID] Ravenous: Seriously answer.

  [RAID] Ash: I’m fine. Just stuck.

  The mini-dragon tilted its head. “Your allies demand your return.”

  “They always do,” Ash said.

  He lowered his dagger slightly. “Okay. If you want to come with me, I’m not exactly in a position to say no.”

  The dragon puffed out a chest made of eight triangles and three missing textures.

  “Excellent,” the dragon said. “Then I will join your party.”

  Ash blinked. “You can do that?”

  “No,” the dragon admitted. “But the system has no protocols for cut content.”

  A shimmer of corrupted pixels crawled across its tiny body.

  Ash’s UI pinged.

  [WARNING: INVALID PARTY REQUEST]

  “Uh—”

  The dragon hopped once, then slammed its head into Ash’s shin.

  A shock of static shot through him as the UI violently spasmed.

  [PARTY MEMBER ADDED: Boss_Prototype_03]

  [ERROR: PARTY LIMIT EXCEEDED — 7/6]

  [ERROR: MEMBER CLASSIFICATION INVALID]

  [ERROR: ENTITY SHOULD NOT EXIST]

  Ash stared as a seventh portrait jammed sideways into his party bar, half-coded and flickering.

  The dragon looked extremely pleased with itself.

  “There. I am now here,” it said. “Visible to all. Targetable by some. Crash-inducing to a few.”

  “You can’t just force yourself into my team—”

  The chamber trembled.

  Wireframe pillars flickered.

  A deep, distant groan rolled up from the darkness beyond.

  The dragon’s wings tucked tight.

  “We must go,” it said. “Something else has woken up.”
