He watched from the shadows as Celeste moved through the underbrush. Every muscle in her body was attuned to the wild—ears flicking, eyes sharp, tail held just so to balance her weight. She paused, nose high, catching the faintest scent. In one fluid motion, she crouched low, stalking a plump rabbit nibbling beneath a hazel bush. Kane hardly saw her move; one moment she was still, the next, she’d pounced, quick as a flash, dispatching the rabbit with a swift, precise bite.
She barely paused. Her attention shifted; a quail rustled nearby. Celeste maneuvered through the ferns, her movements so silent that Kane, a trained royal hunter, was genuinely astonished. She circled, then leapt again—two kills in as many heartbeats.
Kane stepped out from his hiding place, a low whistle escaping him. “That was… incredible,” he admitted, unable to mask his admiration. “I thought I knew how to hunt, but you—Celeste, you move like the forest itself.” Celeste, a little breathless, just shrugged. “Koa and I had to learn fast. When it’s about survival, you get good or you go hungry.” Despite her words, Kane saw the pride flicker in her eyes.
He fell into step beside her, helping gather the game. As they made their way back, Kane glanced through the trees and spotted Alexandra and Koa by a patch of wildflowers. Alexandra was weaving a crown from the blooms, her tongue sticking out in concentration. Koa, usually so tough, sat perfectly still while she placed the crown atop his head, both of them laughing at how it tilted sideways on his ears. Their laughter was soft, but the connection between them was unmistakable—gentle, easy, and growing stronger with every shared moment. Kane nudged Celeste, nodding toward the pair. “Looks like your brother’s learning new tricks,” he teased. Celeste smiled, a real and rare smile, watching her brother’s happiness bloom beside the royal princess. “He deserves this,” she murmured. “We all do.” Kane glanced at Celeste, his voice warm. “You know, you’re not just a hunter, Celeste. You’re the heart of this new life.” Celeste’s cheeks colored, but she met his gaze steadily. “Maybe. But it’s easier with the right pack beside me.” Together, they returned through the dappled light, the morning air filled with hope, and the promise of new beginnings—both for the hunters, and for the hearts just learning how to trust.
Not far away, Alexandra and Koa lingered in the wildflower patch, the laughter of a few moments ago still hanging between them. The sun was rising higher, catching the colors of the flower crown Alexandra had woven for Koa—a little crooked, but worn with surprising pride. Alexandra fussed with another stem, her brows knitted in concentration. “Hold still,” she said, reaching up to adjust the crown. Her paw brushed Koa’s ear, making him shiver and sit up straighter. “You know,” he said, trying to sound casual, “most wolves would never let themselves be seen like this.” Alexandra grinned, her blue eyes sparkling. “Most wolves aren’t brave enough to be themselves.” Koa blinked, surprised by her boldness. For a heartbeat, neither spoke. The silence was gentle, not awkward. A breeze stirred the grass, and Koa finally laughed—a low, warm sound. “I think I like this version of me better.”
Alexandra glanced at him, her voice soft. “Me too.”
She looked down, tracing circles in the dirt with her paw. “It’s strange… I always thought the only place I’d ever belong was in the palace, following every rule. But out here, with you, it’s different.” Koa shifted closer, their shoulders almost touching. “I know what you mean. I spent most of my life just surviving. But with you, and with Celeste and the others, it feels like… like maybe we get to choose who we are now.”
They sat together, letting the newness of that possibility settle between them. For a moment, Alexandra dared to rest her head on Koa’s shoulder, her tail curling with shy comfort. He didn’t move away—instead, he leaned into her, grounding her with his quiet strength. After a while, Alexandra spoke, her voice barely above a whisper. “We should head back. Before they send a search party.” Koa chuckled and stood, offering his paw. She took it, rising to her feet and shaking, brushing bits of grass from her fur. Together, they walked back toward the castle—Koa wearing his lopsided crown, Alexandra at his side. Between them, something gentle and genuine had begun to bloom, as wild and unexpected as the flowers beneath their feet. Later that night the four of them were in the library, reading through the scrolls that Evelyn had left. “Whoa, guys, look at this!” Koa said, looking over a scroll. Celeste looked over, trotting over as well as Alexandra. Kane was engrossed with his own, only bothering with a simple “What is it?” Celeste peeked over her brother’s shoulder, and Alexandra was on the other side. “‘The loners’” Koa read, “ ‘A group of wolves that keep to themselves, rarely ever seen. Some are rumored to be related to royals and rouges but they split off, making them offshoots.” he continued as Celeste and Alexandra’s ears piqued with curiosity. Kane looked over now, interested and started to walk over. “Mother never showed us that scroll…?” He asked, his face flushing slightly “N-not that I read or anything…” Celeste bumped him playfully, “It’s okay to admit you read,” She smiled at him. His face flushed again. Celeste keeps reading over his shoulder. “I think mother had everyone fighting them off without us knowing.” Alexandra said, “Yeah I think that's why she sent guards so often…” Kane added, piecing things together. “I wonder why she kept it from us, though,” Alexandra said, confused and intrigued that her mother kept something like this from them. “Yeah,” Kane agreed, thinking to himself. “Wait..” Celeste said suddenly, her expression dark. “If Evelyn was the only thing keeping them from attacking….then who’s stopping them now…!” She suddenly said, her words dawning on the rest of them as they all realized what that meant. “This is bad,” Koa said, self-consciously glancing around nervously. “Do we send guards?” Alexandra said nervously, fidgeting with the rock in her paws.A moment of silence passed between the four of them, thinking.

Koa broke the silence first, glancing over at Alexandra. She was still fidgeting with the flower crown she’d woven for him earlier, her eyes downcast and thoughtful. He nudged her gently, his voice low so only she could hear. “You know, I never thought I’d be here like this—with you. If you’d told me a year ago that a royal and a rogue would ever be… friends, or more, I wouldn’t have believed it.”
Alexandra smiled, still shy, but there was a new confidence in the way she met his gaze. “I wouldn’t have believed it either. But I’m glad we’re here now. The world feels a lot less scary when you’re by my side.” Koa felt his chest warm at her words. He reached out, gently brushing a lock of fur away from her face. “We’ll face whatever comes next together. I promise.”
Their moment didn’t go unnoticed. Celeste, watching out of the corner of her eye, felt a surge of happiness for her brother—and for Alexandra, the quiet princess who had become so much braver than anyone expected. Kane noticed too, and he smiled, his tail thumping once in approval. Kane then turned to Celeste, his tone teasing but soft. “Looks like we’re not the only pair in this castle with feelings that run deeper than loyalty.” Celeste rolled her eyes, but she couldn’t hide her smile. “You’re one to talk, Prince.”
He stepped closer to her, lowering his voice. “I meant what I said. I want to build this new life with you—not just as allies, but as mates. As equals.” Celeste met his gaze, something fierce and vulnerable burning in her eyes. “I want that too. But we have to protect this—what we’re building. For everyone. For them.” She nodded toward Koa and Alexandra, who were now quietly laughing together, their worries momentarily forgotten. Kane brushed his nose gently against Celeste’s, a gesture of affection and trust. “We will. Together.” As the four of them stood in the quiet library, surrounded by ancient scrolls and the uncertain promise of the future, the bonds between Alexandra and Koa—and between Celeste and Kane—grew stronger. Their love was forged in hardship and hope, a light that would help guide their new kingdom through whatever darkness was yet to come.
