Chapter 18: A Dangerous Game

You sure it’s here? Maxwell sent to the bluebird he should probably find a name for.

They were following a high-level animal the bird saw a few days ago.

They chilled in the cave for some time, waiting for some high-level animals to show up, but they were disappointed.

As the planet was in initiation for just two months, there weren’t many high-level monsters.

In Zephyr, grade 3s started appearing in the third year, so Maxwell was a bit concerned about their future growth.

“Chirp.” The bird answered, sounding sure. The animal they were searching for was a strange burrower. Maxwell couldn’t place it under any animal type he knew, but it was high-leveled all right.

He used some power from his second mind to be more alert as he felt the world slow down. He also fully turned on Prima Sense. This was an ambusher animal, and he didn’t want to start the fight at a disadvantage.

As he looked around, he suddenly heard a scream coming from Bob. The boy had been following him without a care in the world until this point.

He turned back in a hurry to see what the deal was, only to see Bob trying to pull something away from his face. There was a mole-like creature on his face, clawing at it with sheer abandon.

For a second, Maxwell was unsure if this scene was funny or bad, but it luckily ended quickly, as Bob managed to fling the creature away. Maxwell immediately used observation on it.

  Berserker Mole - Lvl-27 - Angry

So it’s really a mole, Maxwell thought. The creature was a bit bigger than a regular mole, but it was still small for his level, considering that only the strongest creatures had these high levels.

He watched the creature start burrowing with incredible speed, quickly disappearing to normal eyes. Maxwell could still see it with his prima sense though. He quickly created a mana bolt with the metal affinity and threw it on the ground where the mole was.

There was an explosion of dirt as the bolt hit the ground exploding in a burst of energy, and the mole was exposed, looking unharmed but surprised. It looked at Maxwell, and he could see its bead-like eyes clearly before it spit a rock at him at high speed.

Maxwell didn’t expect the attack at all, as the mole had given no hints before. He watched as the rock approached him, but his body was too slow to respond to his commands.

Then he felt a force from his side knocking him away as Bob shoved him at the last moment. The boy received the rock on his chest with a bang, and he was flung away by the force, going through a tree in the process.

I really need to create a defensive skill. Maxwell thought before summoning around two dozen mana bolts in the air. He infused them with random particles from the air, borrowing the capacity of his mathematician mind to select them.

He spotted the mole with his prima sense once again before throwing the bolts around the general area of the animal.

The following explosion was weird as different energies clashed before exploding In a multicolored flash of light.

There was a wave of heat, vibration and coldness at the same time as they watched the complicated explosion. Maxwell’s senses were blinded for a couple of seconds due to the chaotic mana in the area.

As the mana dispersed, they could see the mole inside a small crater created by the explosion. It seemed to have used a defensive skill as his body looked like stone.

It looked a bit beat up, but it was definitely not out of the fight yet. If anything, it looked angrier than before. This time, Maxwell could catch that it was preparing to spit another attack.

Bob chose this moment to re-enter the battle. He jumped at the animal, launching himself for at least a dozen meters in an arch. A line of blood was flowing down his scalp, but he seemed relatively unharmed.

The mole was far from impressed by the attempt. It responded by spitting a bigger rock than before towards the flying boy.

Bob and the flying rock collided in the air, but in an unnatural refusal of physics, Bob continued on his path despite getting hit by a more potent attack compared to before.

The mole was clearly surprised by the weird phenomenon as it frantically tried to dodge the strange human who was flying towards it.

It could dodge only partially as Bob managed to hit the animal on its side instead of its head. The confused mole found himself embedded in a nearby rock.

While being unexpected and flashy the hit didn’t seem to harm the animal quite as much as expected. The animal jumped back from the rock with amazing speed towards Bob.

This tale has been unlawfully lifted from Royal Road. If you spot it on Amazon, please report it.

It quickly started clawing at Bob and the boy responded by punching the animal in the face while completely ignoring the hits.

Not expecting such a bold move, the animal was hit squarely on its face. It flew like a cannonball and impacted a rock in the distance for the second time.

While Bob was having a brawl with the animal, Maxwell was trying something new.

He was focused on creating a single mana bolt and one could see this was much bigger than his other bolts.

This was hardly the thing special about the bolt. He was trying something hard as his mind was evenly divided into two. This was his first time using the Parallel Thoughts in battle and it was turning out to be really useful.

What he was doing was simple enough in theory. He was infusing mana on the bolt, but he was using two different elements.

He was using metal element on the outside while filling the inside with volatile fire mana. There was probably a better selection for both but he simply didn't have many types to choose from.

If everything worked as intended, the bolt would pierce the mole’s defenses before exploding. While the previous bolt he used on the crocodile would probably be successful in killing the mole, Maxwell still wanted to improve the attack.

At this point, he had pumped almost a thousand mana into this bolt, and when he saw the mole embedded in the rock after Bob’s punch, he didn’t hesitate to send it.

This time, the bolt was even faster. Maxwell though, saw it going slowly towards the animal as his mind was in full speed at the moment.

He saw the animal look at the flying bolt and he could see the mana in the creature's body move as it was using everything on defense.

A moment later a deafening crack was heard in the forest as the bolt impacted the creature’s hardened fur. It was followed by a silent explosion of heat as the rock the mole was embedded in cracked in half before getting swallowed by a reddish mana explosion.

Maxwell was surprised to not receive a kill notification. He quickly did some math to better understand the beast's durability.

If this animal gained something like 25 stat points every level after advancement then it would have around 425 points just from the 17 level it gained after the evolution.

It was not hard to see that this animal would be tough to kill even without its skills. This fact was proven as they could finally see the animal through the explosion as it was standing on the ground.

Its hardened fur was broken in many places, exposing burned flesh underneath. It also had cracks covering his body like a broken vase. With dismay, he noticed that cracks were healing already.

Maxwell could see that the animal was far from death. The crocodile they killed before was caught unaware by his attack but this mole saw it clearly before it impacted.

Keep it busy for as much as you can, he sent at Bob before he concentrated on finding a solution. He could see the boy getting confused for a second due to unexpected telepathy before he rushed at the animal.

With his busted class and trait, Bob would be able to hold the beast back for quite a while he tried to find a solution for their problem.

He focused on creating something that could actually kill this beast and stopped paying attention to the battle, completely entrusting his safety to Bob.

He created a simple mana bolt and he started streching the bolt diagonally. Little by little he changed the shape of the construct as he visualized a spear.

He used guide mana and soul’s voices together like the time he used them on his own mana stream.

This mana on the bolt was purely his own attributeless mana. He postponed the infusion as it would decrease his ability to communicate with the mana.

He guided the mana as he visualized a spear with a very sharp tip in his mind. Patiently, he conveyed the image to the particles.

He watched as mana was organized into a shape of a spear. He was surprised to see that, even though he didn’t specify, he could see that metal mana was more concentrated on the tip of the spear, making it more like a real spear and not just a stick

Here we go, he thought and started infusing mana on the spear. This time, he only used metal mana to maximize hardness.

Soon, he could feel his mana reaching dangerous levels, forcing him to use his natural regeneration to infuse the spear. This made the whole process a lot slower. He hoped Bob could hold on.

When he was satisfied, he looked up from the bolt, finally giving himself a moment to check the state of the battle.

Couple minutes should have passed since Bob started fighting the little beast and Bob’s state clearly represented that from what he could see.

The boy was bleeding all over as his body was covered with cuts and bruises. His eyes were bloodshot and the whole battlefield was drenched with blood. Maxwell watched the boy scream as he charged once again at the mole.

The said animal looked miserable as it’s body was filled with a lot of new cracks. It looked at Bob almost disbelievingly, clearly not understanding how this human could go on like this.

It braced for impact as Bob moved like a freight train, his injuries buffing him to completely unnatural levels.

I’m ready, Max sent to the boy. And he could see that boy look at him very briefly before continuing on his way. He seemed barely conscious at this point.

He watched as Bob reached the animal and could see that animal was used to this exchange at this point. It confidently covered himself with its hardening as it waited for Bobs punch to connect.

It was confused when Bob grabbed it instead of punching it. Throwing it was quite useless with its defense after all so it couldn’t understand this humans reasoning.

Bob, meanwhile, moved like he was on autopilot. He turned around himself, holding the animal in one hand as it clawed his arm. There was a moment of silence, in which the only sound was the sound of claws tearing his flesh before he threw the animal with astounding speed towards Maxwell

Maxwell thanked his past self for not limiting his mind’s capabilities as he saw the mole flying towards him fast enough to be perceived as fast even to his enhanced senses.

He positioned the spear he had created and prepared to launch it as he connected with it for one last time. He visualized a scene in which the spear was piercing through the mole and sent this through the connection.

The spear didn’t even wait for additional directions as it launched itself towards the animal.

For a second, the spear’s speed made Maxwell thought that he was using his mind in default speed. He watched the spear whizz with an incredible burst of speed.

Its sharp tip reached the animal in a moment, and the mole barely had any time to be surprised before being pierced by it.

To its credit, it was launched back with the spear instead of being completely pierced by it. They watched as the body of the Mole punched through several trees as it flew.

There was an explosion of white light in the distance as the mana construct finally reached its limit and destabilized.

Is this still not enough? Maxwell asked in exasperation. If that was the case, he prepared to run, as they had nothing remaining to use against the animal.

Then he felt a feeling of relief wash over him as he finally heard the notifications coming.
