Chapter 13

  14th of July, 1:34 AM

Toby asked if I wanted to go on a walk after dinner, it was Japanese food this time.

His outfit was a lot like the one he had on yesterday. Flannel pants, yellow this time. A band t-shirt, it's The Prodigy tonight. He still has the yellow beanie and red sneakers from last night.

We left the house around 7:10. He was wanting to walk around in another part of the city.

"This part of San Diego is just houses, it's no fun here," he said. "Please, can we go somewhere else?"

  "Alright, alright, where?"

"Let's do Balboa Park!" Toby tells me. He's excited.

We got in my car (it's not my car, it's actually Helen's, she lets me use it, it's a dark blue Honda Civic) and drove towards Balboa Park.

"What's your favourite band?" Toby asked me during the drive, a few minutes after we drove out of the neighbourhood that the Castle is in.

"I'd say it's My Bloody Valentine."

Toby said they’re cool. He then said, "Guess mine."

  "The Prodigy."

  "Nope, try again."

  "Oh, Nirvana."

"Nice! Yea, what made you think of that?"

"You were talking about them yesterday."

"Oh, right," Toby said with a laugh. He asked, "Hmm, do you know my favourite Nirvana song?"

I tried to remember what Toby and I talked about yesterday around the time Nirvana came up. While I was trying to remember, Toby said, "Ooo, did I get you, Trevor?"

Unauthorized duplication: this narrative has been taken without consent. Report sightings.

I kept trying to remember what he told me. Then it came to me.

"You know, for a second, you got me," I told Toby. A smile crept across my face. I said the song's title, "You Know You're Right."

"Aww," whined Toby. "Yea, you got it."

After talking about Nirvana and My Bloody Valentine for a little, Toby said to me, "Are you from San Diego?"

  "Nah, northeastern California."

"Hm, north," Toby said. He was picking his nails. He finished and said, "Reminds me of where I'm from."

"You're from the north too?" I asked.

"Not the north part of California," Toby chuckled. "North Dakota."

"You're from North Dakota?" I asked, looking away from the road for only a moment to give him a look of surprise.

He said yea and asked why I was looking at him like that. I said I was shocked because it’s really far away and there’s nothing but grass there. He said that’s not true, and that there’s mountains there too. I don’t know anything about North Dakota, so I didn’t know how to continue the conversation. I asked after a second, “Are you from the capital of North Dakota or what?"

"No, I lived near Grand Forks."

I asked him how life there was.

"Boring, freezing," answered Toby. He chuckled again and added, "Stupid."

  "There's nothing to do there?"

"Yea, literally nothing. San Diego's SO much fucking BETTER."

We talked as we found a place to park, and continued talking as we walked around. We found out we have the same phone, a Nokia 3200.

Helen gave me a phone before my first day at Tempting. She wanted to be able to check on me. I don't think I've written this down.

There's an area in Balboa Park called Redwood Circle. We sat at a picnic table to rest for a bit.

Another question I had asked was, "Why do you like feet so much?"

Toby smirked. His explanation was, "I just do. I like feet. I love everything about feet. I like feet on my dick, on my face, in my mouth. I love feet."

Toby's smirk slowly left. He glanced down at the table, then back at me. He asked me, "Do you think there's something wrong with that?"

I shook my head and said, "No."

With a small smile, Toby said, "Cool."

Toby complimented the outfit I had on today. I was wearing a large pair of jeans, my Doc Martens, and a small green t-shirt.

"I like your style," Toby told me. I thanked him.

We got home at 11:53. We brushed our teeth, and then went to our rooms.
