The morning of Day 5 dawned gray and cold, heavy clouds obscuring the sun and promising rain. Aarav sat on the eastern watchtower, his injured ankle propped on a crate, watching the forest for any sign of movement. Twelve crystals sat heavy in his pouch. One evolution waited to be used.
And somewhere out there, Commander Valeria was planning her next move.

Thorn climbed up to join him, his face thoughtful. "I've been thinking about those traps you mentioned. The approach is still too open. If a determined team hits us, they could reach the wall before we can stop them."
"What do you have in mind?"
Thorn spread a rough sketch on the platform. "Pit traps here and here, covered with branches and dirt. Caltrops scattered in the high grass. A deadfall near that rock outcropping—loose boulders we can trigger remotely. And if Lilian can grow something thorny along the path..."
Aarav studied the sketch, impressed. "That's... extensive. How much would it cost to build manually?"
"Two weeks, maybe more. We don't have that kind of time."
"No. But I can evolve them." He calculated quickly. "Each pit trap would cost about three hundred mana. Caltrops less—maybe one sixty for a batch. Deadfall another three hundred. We have twelve crystals. Six hundred mana. Not enough for everything."
"Then prioritize. What's most important?"
Aarav considered. The pit traps would slow an advance, channel enemies into kill zones. The caltrops would wound and hinder. The deadfall could eliminate multiple enemies at once.
"The deadfall first. It's the only one that can actually kill."
Thorn nodded. "Good choice. I'll show you the spot."
---
They descended from the tower and made their way to the rock outcropping Thorn had identified. It was perfect—a massive overhang of loose boulders, positioned directly above the narrowest part of the approach. One good trigger, and tons of rock would come down.
Aarav studied the formation, calculating.

The rocks shifted, settled, and stabilized—but Aarav could feel the difference. They were no longer a natural formation. They were a weapon, waiting to be triggered. A single well-placed impact would send them thundering down.
Thorn examined the result, pressing here and there, testing the balance. When he stepped back, he was smiling.
"Perfect. Absolutely perfect. One rock to this spot—" he pointed to a key boulder—"and the whole thing comes down. Anyone under it is dead."
Aarav checked his remaining resources.

Six crystals left. Enough for one more small evolution tomorrow, but nothing major.
He needed to find more crystals. Again.
---
The team gathered at midday to discuss strategy. Seraphina spread a rough map on a flat rock, showing their position, the surrounding terrain, and the distant location of the central fortress.
"We're doing well," she began. "Three hundred twenty tokens. Top twelve percent in our realm. But we need to keep pushing. The top ten percent get significant advantages in Phase 3."
Marcus grunted. "What's the next move?"
"We need to start thinking about the central fortress. It's the biggest prize—five hundred tokens for the team that holds it at the end. But every team will be going for it. We can't just charge in."
"Weakest first," Velira suggested. "Pick off smaller teams, gather tokens and crystals. Build our strength before the final push."
Seraphina nodded. "Agreed. But we also need to deal with the Iron Vanguard. They're still out there, still a threat. Valeria won't give up."
This book is hosted on another platform. Read the official version and support the author's work.
Aarav spoke up. "She set a trap for us yesterday. She's smart, patient, and she has a mythical talent we don't fully understand. We need to be careful."
"Time Slip," Korvus said. "I've heard of it. Lets her move faster than normal, dodge attacks, reposition instantly. But it has limits—she can only use it for short bursts, and it drains her mana quickly."
"That's useful to know." Seraphina looked at Aarav. "Can you do anything with that information?"
He considered. "If we can force her to use it repeatedly, drain her mana, she becomes vulnerable. Prolonged engagement favors us."
"Then that's the plan. Next time we meet, we don't let her escape."
---
The afternoon was spent reinforcing the camp and resting. Aarav's ankle throbbed, but it was healing. Lilian's plants had medicinal properties, and she'd made a poultice that reduced the swelling.
He sat on the wall, watching the forest, the carved wolf in his hands. Ten days left. Ten evolutions. Ten chances to make a difference.
Velira appeared beside him, silent as always. "You think about home often?"
"Every moment." He didn't look at her. "You?"
"I've been summoned so many times, I've forgotten what home feels like." Her voice was soft, distant. "But this team... this feels like something. Maybe the closest I'll get."
Aarav nodded. "I know what you mean."
They sat in companionable silence, watching the sun move across the sky.
---
At sunset, Mira returned from scouting with urgent news.
"The Iron Vanguard. They've set up camp five kilometers east. About forty of them."
"Forty?" Seraphina's eyes widened. "They recruited?"
"Looks like it. Valeria's been busy. She's got at least three teams working together now."
The camp fell silent. Forty Lords. Their ten. Even with their fortifications, those were terrible odds.
"How?" Marcus demanded. "How did she convince three teams to work together?"
"Fear, probably." Velira's voice was grim. "She's been hunting smaller teams, offering them a choice—join or die. The survivors joined."
Seraphina's jaw tightened. "Then we need to hit them before they're ready to hit us. Tonight."
"Tonight?" Grim looked doubtful. "We're wounded. Tired. Outnumbered four to one."
"Which is exactly why they won't expect us." Seraphina looked at Aarav. "Can you do anything? With your evolution?"
He had six crystals. Three hundred mana. Not enough for anything major.
"I can make distractions. Maybe create some chaos. But I can't fight forty Lords."
"Then we don't fight them. We hit and run. Kill a few, make them afraid, and retreat to our fortifications. Make them come to us."
Aarav thought of the deadfall, the wall, the towers. If they could draw the Iron Vanguard into the kill zone, the defenses would do the rest.
"It could work," he said slowly. "But we need to be smart. Very smart."
---
They planned through the evening, studying maps, assigning roles, preparing for the night raid. Aarav would use his remaining crystals—not for evolutions, but for something else.
He took six crystals—all he had—and placed them in a small pouch. If he crushed them at the right moment, the mana release would create a flash, a bang, a distraction. Not as good as an evolved bomb, but better than nothing.
At midnight, they moved.
---
The Iron Vanguard's camp was exactly where Mira had said—a temporary settlement of tents and fires, with sentries posted and patrols moving. Forty Lords, maybe more, sleeping or resting or planning their next move.
Seraphina's team spread out around the perimeter, staying low, using every bit of cover. Aarav crept forward with Velira, the pouch of crystals in his hand.
They found a position overlooking the camp—a small rise with a clear view of the central tent. Valeria's tent, probably.
"Now?" Velira whispered.
"Wait for the signal."
Minutes passed. Then, from the opposite side of the camp, a cry—Marcus and Grim, making noise, drawing attention.
Sentries ran toward the sound. Patrols changed direction. Chaos began to build.
Aarav crushed the crystals.
The mana release was blinding—a flash of blue-white light, a thunderous crack, a shockwave that sent nearby tents flying. Lords screamed, stumbled, fell.
In the chaos, Velira moved.
She was in the camp before anyone could react, her blades finding targets—a sentry here, a sleeping Lord there, anyone she could reach. She killed three before the enemy even understood what was happening.
Then she was gone, fading into shadow as Aarav's distraction faded.
From the other side, Mira's arrows rained down, wounding two more. Tarak appeared and disappeared, striking and fleeing. Korvus's cats harried the edges, drawing attention, creating confusion.
The Iron Vanguard panicked. They didn't know how many attackers there were, where they were coming from, what was happening. In the darkness and chaos, they fought shadows.
When the attack ended, five more of their number were dead.
The Angelic Vanguard retreated into the night, leaving the enemy camp in chaos.
---
They regrouped at the ridge, breathless and exhilarated.

Three hundred seventy tokens. Top ten percent within reach.
And no casualties. No injuries. A perfect strike.
Seraphina gathered them at the wall, pride evident in her eyes. "That was textbook. Hit hard, hit fast, disappear. They'll be terrified now. They won't know when we'll strike next."
Velira appeared from shadow, her blades clean, her expression satisfied. "Valeria wasn't there. Her tent was empty."
"Probably leading a patrol. She'll be back." Seraphina looked at Aarav. "Your distraction made the difference. Those crystals... you sacrificed your entire reserve."
"I'll find more." He shrugged, though inside he felt the loss. Six crystals. Three hundred mana. Gone.
But five enemy Lords were dead. Worth the price.
