Chapter 54

  Corridor

Flanked by a couple of Knights she didn’t know, and Penelope trailing behind her, Veronique was on her way to visit a recovering Kain, a badly sewed together handkerchief in the pocket of her dress.

It was her thanks to him saving her, she didn’t even know for certain if giving an handkerchief to Knight was a truly thing both there and in her old world, since it wasn’t something she had ever focused on.

Not that there were many things she did, aside from Horror movies…but she would refer to that more as an obsession.

But Veronique had got lost in the project before she could even think of asking Miss Hawkings on what would be proper to gift Kain.

Which reminded her how irritating it was that the older woman refused to explain how she could one shot those things with a kick.

‘Who the fuck is she, One Kick Woman?’ she joked in her head then confusion came over her as the shreds of a memory eluded her ‘wait was there a show like that? I can’t remember…whatever! Focus on the moment Veronique’ she scolded herself feeling a little lost as neither Kain or Lucia were with her, even Mos and Bos had to stay behind and she wasn’t appreciative of Penelope’s company.

However this was the only way Veronique could go as Rhea had started crying as soon as she tried to leave with them, so Lucia had to stay behind to make sure Mos and Bos would behave, which left her with Penelope having to accompany her instead.

They wouldn’t have had this issue if Rhea was allowed to follow, and Veronique was secretly glad she couldn’t or she wouldn’t have even suggested it.

  The child was traumatized enough.

It was a bit of a shame, she was sure Kain would have liked to see the dogs and she was sure both of them were missing the guard as well, but things weren’t that easy and to be honest Veronique was getting more worried about Rhea then Kain.

The sweet child had just been recovering from seeing Margaret’s dead body and then those scorpions came out of nowhere and killed one of her guards on top of it.

Now the redhead was sure Rhea didn’t actually see the guy dead because the child was hiding behind her, but she couldn’t be absolutely certain about it because it was possible that Rhea could have seen a glimpse of it when Penelope grabbed her, and it wasn’t like his dying scream alone wasn’t traumatizing.

Rhea had turned skittish and was afraid of going anywhere alone, which given what had happened was completely understandable, even an adult could react this way if they were attacked right in the safety of their home.

However experiencing such thing as child had potential of scarring them for life and the last thing Veronique wanted was for all of this to play out like all of those reincarnation stories where the former hero of the story ends up getting a fate similar to the villain’s former demise.

Just thinking about Rhea going insane and ending up in an asylum made her skin crawl

‘There must be something I can do, but I am not a qualified therapist’ Veronique thought ‘I would suggest for Rhea to see one, but do they even have those there?’

It was a good thing that they were still rooming together, while they finished killing those things and secured the place however Veronique knew Rhea wasn’t going to react well when they will have to separate.

She also got attached to Mos and Bos as well, so that was going to be another issue and to be honest Veronique felt bad knowing she would still have the dogs’s comfort while Rhea would be left alone.

Duchess Lucretia had whisked away Rhea on a few occasions, even invited Veronique to join, but the redhead always refused, mostly because she knew she was on thin ice and that such thing was already against etiquette, which remembered her how much she hated this whole noble thing.

Children weren’t even allowed to be just children and Mothers couldn’t be just Mothers.

  A perfect golden cage indeed.

However deep under her worry for Rhea there was a fear, one that might sound selfish to express but that Veronique feared all the same.

What if Mos and Bos were taken away from her and given to Rhea? It was undeniable that the dogs were helping the child cope with the recent trauma and it could be made a case that Rhea needed them.

It was a bit funny how such a problem wouldn’t really exist if they didn’t live in one big ass mansion and neither of them wouldn’t be able to see the dogs for several hours.

Heck before this whole mess Mos and Bos had no chance of ever meeting Rhea due to her schedule.

However it must be said that giving two Dobermans to five year old was a terrible idea, Veronique could barely handle them herself and technicality she was an adult in a eight year old body.

Mos and Bos had grown to almost double their size since that day she named them in the garden.

Maybe Veronique was worrying too much, since the Hound Master was already skeptical of her capability with the dogs there was no way the woman would stand for Rhea to have them either, but then again this household specifically hated Veronique’s guts so it might not be a far fetched idea.

Veronique doesn’t really know how she will react if Rhea were to specifically ask to keep her dogs, and she doesn’t want the two of them to develop an antagonist relationship over them, but they might be pushed to it.

‘Oh well, since I plan to leave this household and stand on my own at worst we will end up never talking to each other’ Veronique thought then a frown came over her when she remembered what the future awaited for Rhea

‘Shit she will marry the dog killer!’ all of the sudden new worries came over her, if Rhea married the Crown Prince then one day she would become the Queen.

The Queen of the only kingdom left, meaning if their relationship was shit then Rhea would have the power to make Veronique’s life hell and there was no way to escape it.

Then as the thought came to her it got dispelled almost immediately.

‘Rhea is too much of a sweet cinnamon roll to do that, her shit husband on the other hand’ Veronique reasoned as a wave of disgust got over her ‘ugh, does she really have to marry that asshole?’ she wondered ‘When his Jerkiness shows up his donkey mug there I will try my best to keep the two apart, and I don’t care if it messes up whatever plot this story had because Rhea deserves much better then him’ she vowed as she reached her destination.
