Chapter 51

  Main Wing, Corridor

Veronique was walking with Rhea and Miss Hawkings, while holding on Mos and Bos’s leash as well as Rhea’s hand, it was a little blessing that she had managed to teach them to keel just shortly before this whole mess happened.

Trailing behind them were Lucia and Penelope, along with four Knights now turned guards, one of which was Kain.

They weren’t the only form of protection in the building.

Knights had been stationed all over since nobody had any idea on who or what killed Margaret and as result everyone was an high alert over some unknown foe…yet all sorts of bad looks were directed straight to the redhead.

Veronique wasn’t an idiot, as soon as she got over the shock of seeing a legit dead body she had started noticing right away what was going on and heard the accusation herself as she passed by some of the servants.

She was certain she was being blamed for Margaret’s murder.

She should have expected it as the favorite scapegoat of the family, there was no doubt that such thing would happen and she had started to wonder if the original Veronique had ever been hated for stuff she did actually do…even if thinking about it, it was likely she had never found out about her skill, Siphon, and most of her bad temper would have come from it.

Veronique wondered why they hated her so much, was it really the classic case of her birth killed her mother so everyone hated her for it? She had no idea and now it wasn’t the time to investigate on it, maybe it will never be as she doubted it would do her any good to know and it was probably a big waste of time to even try to find out.

What was needed now was for the culprit to be discovered and for her to get cleared of such vile accusation, which really didn’t make any sense just from the fact she had been in the Main Dinning Room and then with Miss Hawkings and Rhea, so it wouldn’t have been physically possible for her to do such thing.

But mobs don’t listen to reason and Veronique was getting quite fed up with getting blamed for everything.

The fact such tragedy had happened in the heart of the Inner Garden was the most concerning thing of all.

There were theories that Margaret had died elsewhere and was carried in by someone, but such thing seemed impossible as the body was too fresh and given the violent way of her demise it was extremely unlikely nobody had heard anything.

If you stumble upon this tale on Amazon, it's taken without the author's consent. Report it.

Finding out how Margaret ended up in that spot would be a good first step in uncovering this mystery.

However there was an issue, as much as Veronique wanted to investigate herself doing so would mean going back to the scene of the crime, which not only could give out the wrong idea but it would also bring more suspicion on Veronique the moment she reported anything that resulted correct.

It could be seen as an admission of guilt, and at worse it could be believed she killed Margaret to get herself in the spotlight by solving the murder afterwards.

Veronique didn’t know what she was supposed to do, but doing nothing seemed as wrong, even if it appeared she didn’t really have a choice on the matter.

Kain had been allowed to escort her full time now along with a new guy, some guy named Noah that never took off his helmet, had she not seen the curls escape from it she wouldn’t even know he was a redhead like her.

Rhea got a couple of knights guarding her as well, which Veronique didn’t know the name because they didn’t introduce themselves to her and the child got too busy playing with Mos and Bos to do it herself.

Mos and Bos had been allowed to accompany them as long as it was out of the Main Dinning Room, Lucia would keep a hold of them during the meals along with Kain, whose lower rank still shouldn’t allow him to get inside but he had been allowed due to the circumstances.

It was problem Noah and Rhea’s Knights don’t have.

Yet all four were Knights as far as she knew

‘There must be some kind of rank system within the Knights’ Veronique explained the discrepancy in her head, but while any other day she would have simply asked Kain about it Noah’s presence put her off of it.

Her new guard simply gave out an hostile vibe and seemed quite mad about his new duty, so he didn’t make Veronique comfortable enough to ask questions as she otherwise would do and there was also the issue that now Rhea was basically always with her, so she got to watch out what she said around the child.

Even Miss Hawkings was around more often.

There was also the issue that Veronique wasn’t currently allowed out of the Main Wing, Lucia had to walk Mos and Bos by herself.

Their training took an hit because of all of this, mostly because Rhea wanted to participate and was slowing the whole process down even if the redhead didn’t have the heart to tell her such thing.

So in short Veronique wasn’t in any position to go and play detective and had no choice but to wait for all of it to be over.

Hopefully before she went more insane by having to act like a noble all of the time.

Ever since she started taking that tea she didn’t get as angry anymore, but it was still tiring and she missed the downtime that came with her living in the East wing.

She had just been wishing that such thing would be over when Mos and Bos suddenly stopped in their tracks, fixating on a spot on the marble floor

“Eh? What’s wrong?” Veronique asked out aloud as the dogs refused to move, they did grow up a little in the past week

“I thought you had trained them” Miss Hawkings commented stopping herself

“You know that’s a work in progress” she said back, while Hanging Jaw and Clashing Eyes were mimicking at her to run, just then the dogs started growling and barking.

“Are they alright?” Rhea asked a bit scared as she hid behind Veronique, who followed her dogs’s line of sight with a frown.

  The floor was slightly cracked.

  The crack was getting bigger.
