I recently learned aboutRoyal Road’s strict content policies, and it’s more restrictive than I initially thought. While their guidelines don’t go into detail, I reached out to some senior authors who clarified that a novel can only have up to 15% of its chapters containing “spicy” content. That is good enough, but the problem is this—
Even non-explicit moments, like tending to injuries on the torso or thighs, bathing scenes, or simply mentioning certain body parts (like breast), can still be flagged as sexual content, even if there’s nothing intimate about the scene.
Even this author’s note might be considered a “sexual chapter” just because of 'breast' word here
What’s worse, even pillow talk after a fade-to-black scene counts, meaning the rule isn’t just about explicit content—it extends to anything that even suggests intimacy. I also have a strong suspicion that dual cultivation will fall under this restriction as well.
This puts me in a difficult position. My novel is still in its early stages, and there are so many important plotlines I want to explore beyond just romance.
However, romance and intimacy are part of the story, and I had planned to develop them with depth, not just as surface-level wish-fulfillment. If I have to remove too much, it could weaken the very core of certain characters and relationships.
If you discover this tale on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen. Please report the violation.
For example, Bai Yunxi’s character arc is something I care about deeply. Right now, she may seem weak and helpless, but I planned for her to grow steadily over time. If I have to remove or alter too many aspects of my story, it could fundamentally change not just her development, but also the overall balance of the novel.
I originally left Webnovel because of its contract issues and the overwhelming pressure from readers who only wanted harem collection without genuine romance. Many just wanted a checklist of female characters to be conquered, and if the protagonist let any girl go, I would get bombarded with complaints. I didn’t want my female characters to be mindless trophies—I wanted them to have individuality, personal growth, and meaningful relationships. But Webnovel’s audience often pushed against that, which led me to delete my novel once before.
Now, on Royal Road, I’m facing a different issue—restrictions on how much romance and intimacy I can actually write. So, I’m now at a crossroads:
-
Do I rewrite my novel to fit these limitations?
- This would mean toning down or outright removing intimate moments, which might affect certain plotlines and character development.
-
Do I move to another platform?
- If I leave, I’ll need to find a site that allows more creative freedom, but I also don’t want to go back to the problems I faced on Webnovel.
For now, I’ll proceed cautiously to avoid getting flagged. If necessary, I’ll start posting a toned-down version here while keeping the original, unedited version on a different platform. If things get too restrictive, I may have to delete or rewrite some chapters focused on intimacy.
I really appreciate everyone’s support, and I’ll keep you all updated on what I decide. Thanks for understanding!
(P.S. I’ll be deleting this note later, since it might count as another "sexual chapter" and eat into my 15% limit.)
