“How annoying.”
Kael stared at the expanse of grassy hills that stretched around him in all directions.
He had merely gone to bed a minute before, and right as he was about to drift off, he was here.
No portals, no light shows, just suddenly standing in a grassy field in the middle of who-knows-where.
“Why did this happen to me right as I was going to sleep? Couldn’t it have occurred right after I woke up, or in the middle of the day? I’m tired.”
He sighed and shook his head to clear it of any unnecessary thoughts. He would just have to deal with it.
“Alright, let’s go.” He said and began walking.
————
The sun beat down upon Kael’s face, and he wiped away a line of sweat from his forehead.
It had been seven hours, and he still hadn’t gotten out of the plains.
He looked to his left, and then his right. Everything was just grass, grass, grass and more grass.
“Man. I might just die from fatigue at this point.” He said in a bored tone.
This book was originally published on Royal Road. Check it out there for the real experience.
Abruptly, the world shimmered, and a thirty-meter-tall wall of stone appeared in front of his face. He stopped walking and looked up at the wall.
“Huh. I guess I’m not on Earth anymore.”
A head popped out from the top of the wall and looked at him. Then it opened its mouth and said something that Kael didn’t understand.
He stared at the head as it continued to unsuccessfully attempt to converse with him until it suddenly stopped, ate something, and then continued on its rant, this time in English.
“Hey, you! Down there! Can you understand me now?” The head yelled.
He nodded in affirmation.
“Good. I am going to jump down. Please be patient.”
Kael stared at the head as it revealed its full body (being that of a male human) and jumped down from the top of the wall, landing beside him.
”Greetings friend. From where do you hail?” The head man asked.
“Earth,” Kael responded.
The head man frowned at that.
“I see. Well, I can’t say I know where that is exactly, so I am going to have to make a quick check of your belongings. Are you ok with that?”
Kael nodded.
The head man smiled and looked him up and down.
“You aren’t armed, as far as I can see. Hmm, let me check your pockets.”
He then proceeded to check Kael’s pockets and shoes for whatever he wanted to find, and after failing in his search, patted Kael on the shoulder.
“You’re all set. You can enter the city. Have a good day.”
Kael nodded and then looked at the wall expecting it to perhaps open up, or break into two pieces.
The head man looked at him questioningly.
“Head on in, what are you waiting for?”
Kael looked at the wall once more.
”You’re telling me I just have to walk through the wall?”
”Yes, how else would you enter the city?”
Kael stared at the head man for a moment and then nodded.
”Ok.”
He then proceeded to walk through the wall and enter the city.
The head man (who was in fact named Terry) frowned at the spot in the wall where Kael had walked through.
”What an odd young man.”
